Is there a PuristS watch at any price point?

 By: cazalea : October 30th, 2014-10:14
I've been traveling again and haven't been anywhere that carries "serious" watches. Last night my wife asked if there was some threshold above which a watch became of interest to PuristS. The Sistem 51 seems to qualify on several fronts and it's about $15...

Any price point including the $0 price point.

One can be a PuristS at any price level. Even at the $0 price level (no watch) as long as they are of pure heart and they enjoy watches for what they are with an open mind. PuristS are all about appreciation, and once you can appreciate horology to a cert...

There are "pure" watches at all price points.

For me, a "pure" (maybe also "Purists") watch is a watch that does what it's supposed to do without pretending to be something it's not. That certainly includes some relatively inexpensive mechanical watches (think Seiko, for example). I also admit to gru...

A watch whose cardinal value is not money.

It can cost nothing or a lost, that doesn't matter. Which matters is the Watch. Not the brand or the so called social status.... Best, Nicolas

+1, well put! [nt]

.....if you surveyed ALL PuristS and asked the following question: "Is the most precious watch to you also your most expensive watch?"....I would guess the vast majority would say No.

... SPOT ON. Do you wear a watch for yourself? Or do you wear it for everyone else? Sure, we all like pricey time pieces and it seems that us Purists aren't tamed until we spend upwards of eight, ten, twenty or even a hundred thousand dollars. Truth is, I...

A watch is a part of you... It shows who you are...

We must be totally schyzophrenic! :) All the best, my friend, very well put. Nicolas

... Schizo! It's part of our Purist DNA. There's this very beautiful, very sexy lady that lives in New Mexico. We like each other a lot... and I mean A LOT. But with me in L.A. and her in N.M., the geography is a bit of a challenge. And so, I let her know...

It is the mind and attitude, NOT the price.

Of course, fake watch has no place here. If a watch collector bought a few PPro ABR for the purpose of trading, does it turn a purist watch into a non purist watch? Regards Ling

Interesting...and to add further

I find it interesting that this question came up today as I was asked something similar, maybe not exactly, yesterday by a client who doesn't wear a watch. He is interested in getting one and brought up some brands of good quartz watches, and when I sugge...

very collectible to me because it is designed by Michael Graves, the famous architect. Made for Target stores, so you know it was very inexpensive. ...

Many of our favorites or grails are expensive watches

but I agree with the rest of you that price has no bearing. To me it is the love of the gears, springs, feel of winding the watch, the sound the rotor makes (hopefully not too noisy ;-)), the weight of the case or lack there of, different hands, finishes,...

Great summary

Hi Think you covered most of it. Though I'd include all watchesb- I just need to think cool watch , or it just looks fab. I've a number of swatches - they're great watches and while not mechanical they're still interesting- be it for being a great colour,...

I agree that there is no price point including "0"....

... rather, there should be a point where the "price comes first" kinda mentality. Meaning, showing off super expensive watch and calls it "purists" watch - that is not wrong, but that is not the real point of purists. If you love it, then it is "purists"...

The thorny issue of dodgy copies...

 By: Horologamist : November 10th, 2014-17:53
My question: is it ever possible for a fake to be considered a watch that is worthy of PuristS admiration? Now living in Hong Kong and having spent several years living in Beijing, these places are awash with a bewildering spectrum of illegal copies. Thes...

That's a judgement you have to make; for me a "replica" is a fraud

But a blurred line might be drawn ... Do we accept an old watch revived with parts from several? I'm not sure.
