Manufacture

Why do a lot of people (watch 'journalists', forum members, etc) keep using the word Manufacture in French while speaking/writing in English?

Because there is no English word that means the same thing.

The English equivalent would have to be something like "watch business where for at least some of the watches the main design is done in-house, or by consultants specifically for the brand, or has been purchased so it is now proprietary, or is done by ano...

... watchmaking so we adopt some of the French watchmaking terms. Horlogerie instead of horology often creeps in as well. As long as people don't write "high horlogerie" instead of "haute horlogerie" because that doesn't feel quite right. :-) Andrew
