Versatile Watches for Work & Play

This is in partial response to MTF in an earlier post…

"perhaps the solution is not to match colours but allow all schema to shine through the watch."

This is a very interesting point but I've found myself questioning this wisdom lately.

Allow me to use a car analogy here:

You wouldn't put all-season tires on a sports car, right?

No, what you need to do a true sports car justice are a set of fat, super sticky performance tires that grab at the asphalt like a rabid dog. But these same tires would be downright dangerous in the winter.

And in the theme of my last post - fashion: you wouldn't wear the same set of shoes for sports, in the rain, snow, for a party, a wedding etc. right?

Getting back to watches, a number of my pieces may be suitable for work or for play:

AP Royal Oak (41mm)

Rolex GMT Master II

PP Nautilus Moonphase

PP Aquanaut (ok, this one's pushing it with a suit...)

but here's the question:

Are versatile watches inferior (stylistically or functional) to watches that are specifically bred for a single purpose?

I admit that my watch collection isn't complete enough to properly answer this question. So I throw out this question to my fellow PuristS.

What are your thoughts?

I think a versatile watch will tend to be stylistically superior to specialized ones. Part of the reason for that is that you can get away with an outlandish-looking watch in a specialized situation: if you're diving 3,000 meters under water, a gigantic a...

I think the question of function answers itself

Functionally, a watch that is designed for a particular purpose is bound to out-shine the "versatile" watch in situations that call for that particular purpose. Using your car analogy, it is even clearer: a car that is bred for the race-track or for conqu...
