Do I believe a 2nd hand salesman?

 By: MTF : November 11th, 2014-10:05
Dear forumners, I had an interesting experience last weekend after visiting a watch exhibition in a major European city. Wandering around the shopping haunts and emporiums, I stumbled upon a 2nd hand dealer of watches. There was a minor complication watch...

Interesting

Some time ago I was at an official dealer of a lot of famous brands. He told me that almost all Big Fliegers from IWC came back with rotor problems as they had problems with the size of the rotor. Honestly, I think the reality will in between the statemen...

"it must be hard for a sales guy to have well educated customers like us..."

 By: small-luxury-world : November 11th, 2014-11:06
Yes, for sure! LOL. But the good ones like us :-) I know at least one place with knowledgable people and they told me that they are really happy to talk to people like me, because in so many cases it is only about price, price and price they are forced to...

Yes indeed

Fully agree my friend. We really should meet again some time... What part of the world are you hanging out at the moment? I'm quite often at London, Geneva and Joburg... And a short flight to Berlin is always within scope ;-) Warm regards, Dirk

I'm sure my watchmaker . . .

. . . curses the day I first walked into his establishment ;-) . . .

So that's how they ended up . . .

Patek Philippe

 By: MTF : November 12th, 2014-20:31
It was a Patek Philippe with micro-rotor base movement that had been modified with a world time module... ;) MTF

G, J, P or R case?

 By: small-luxury-world : November 17th, 2014-05:39
Nice temptation anyway! Oliver

G - case. [sigh] (nt)

I don't believe but ...

 By: nilomis : November 11th, 2014-12:20
I understand his point, assuming that you are not a regular customer. One cannot let his wares being rocked by everyone (I'm aware that you are not everyone) risking to see it dropped or worst. On other hand, life is full of myths no matter if we are on w...

High IQ salesman?....

 By: watercolors : November 12th, 2014-02:09
could he just unticipate you "shake" that watch, to try to play a guilt trip until you purchase it? Regards E

I humbly listened to the lecture

 By: MTF : November 12th, 2014-20:27
....and took my money elsewhere even though I had been looking for that particular watch for years. It had been "serviced" recently albeit not back in Geneva but locally.....hmm....that's a different story. Regards, MTF

LOL. At least maybe he shows he cares.

 By: MichaelC : November 12th, 2014-13:49
But I disagree with him. I have done that same thing with every watch I own, and probably every single time I wear one. Heck, it is such a habit I sometimes shake my manual wind PAM372 next to my ear... and I hear nothing which concerns me until I remembe...

That is why I asked for clarification

 By: MTF : November 12th, 2014-20:22
Michael, I could have dismissed his initial statement but chose to ask for clarification on what G forces are used to test watches. When he did not elaborate, I changed the subject and walked away. Regards, MTF

3g? App time.

 By: BDLJ : November 12th, 2014-14:03
3-5g? That's what he said? That's quite a brutal bit of acceleration to impart to a watch via wrist flicking. Now I am not certain of the accuracy of the inertial gyros in smart phones; but as a test and to get a feeling for the forces... Try installing a...

What an intriguing experiment

New Rule: Once shook, considered sold

Melvyn, You didn't read that displayed sign? Regards Ling

I'm all shook up

 By: MTF : November 13th, 2014-23:58
:-) No, Ling; I did not see that one coming. It's always good to do some 'secret shopper' visits so we know what real world sales and service is like. This is possible if we each do it in a city that we are not familiar with and swap stories. Regards, MTF...

I call BS on shock and G forces

 By: ED209 : November 14th, 2014-14:12
I know of fellow PuristS that have worn AP RO's regularly while shooting handguns, rifles and shotguns. Didn't affect accuracy (of the firearm nor the watch :) ). Regards, ED-209

Point of order

 By: MTF : November 14th, 2014-17:07
Ed, I'm tending to your viewpoint but to be fair, the salesman was only concerned about breakage of the winding pivot and not watch timing accuracy. Maybe we have been lucky with our automatic watches or they don't have huge wobbly rotors like IWC. I've s...
