BaselWorld 2015: JeanRichard Terrascope GMT – New and improved

Apr 09, 2015,00:02 AM

As mentioned, at BaselWorld I had the chance to sit down with JeanRichard and have a closer look at their Novelties of this year.

A lot of new and improved features were added to their watches this year!

But to start from the beginning, the Terrascope line is made for adventures. “The accomplice of explorers of the planet”.

So what complication would be more natural to add to the line but the GMT? Every adventurer and explorer will sooner or later travel, so the need of a second time zone feels like a natural evolution of the Terrascope!

Terrascope GMT, Grey dial, reference 60520-11-101-FBBA

The new GMT function is easy to read visualized by a blue arrow hand with plenty of luminous which makes it easy to read in the dark. 24 hours marking on the inner part of the dial, i.e. the GMT makes one full circle in one day.

The black nickel hour-, minute- and seconds hands are also with luminous material. The seconds hand have red arrow tip. Nice touch to give the watch a small splash of color.

New feature on the dial; the GMT function is not the only new thing on the dial. Another feature that was introduced this year is the suspended indexes. Instead of the normal way of applying the indexes on the dial, JeanRichard has developed a construction where the indexes are suspended on a ring mounted on the inside of the bezel. This will give the illusion of the indexes floating above the dial, enhancing the depth of the dial.

Modular case; the case is the same as earlier, 44 mm modular case which allows JR to combine different material and complications easily into the Terrascope line. Here the case is all stainless steel.

What is new this year is 1) the vertical satin-finished polishing. Gives the watch a very exclusive and sport look!

2) The open case back. For a line that never had open case back before I understand that this is something very nice to be able to show… But personally I am not convinced. I don’t find it very exciting to see a “normal” automatic movement. I would much rather seen a manual movement with really nice finishing or an exceptional automatic movement. OK, to be far – at this price point this is a very nice movement. But my other concern is size of the opening. For a 44 mm watch the opening is quite small, guess it has to do with the size of the movement. Plus, I kind of liked the JR logo that was engraved on the case back before…

Inside is the caliber JR62. Automatic movement with min. 42 hours power reserve. Functions; hours, minutes, seconds, second time zone and date.

The Terrascope GMT also comes in with blue dial –

Rubbergator strap; new is also the strap. A molded rubber strap with alligator pattern. Gives you both the comfort and advantage of a rubber strap, but also the elegance of the alligator. The stitches are another nice detail, adding to the more elegance side.

I say comfort of rubber, first time I tried one of these straps on I could not believe it was rubber! Very soft and supple like a high quality calf skin! But with this one you can swim or go trekking without being afraid of ruin your strap!

Here the hands and indexes are matching the steel case and with matching Rubbergator strap.

The watch comes with a stainless steel folding buckle. There is an option of steel bracelet as well.

I find this new watch from JeanRichard a very nice elegant sports watch! A great offer at a price point where I think they will be able to compete with all the bigger brands in the same range!

My guess is that we will see much more from JeanRichard in the future!

Best

Blomman

Fail to understand their intentions.

If "explore" means to discover under rugged conditions and terrain, this may leave you out. To explore the bars and pubs of any price class could mean that they laugh you out! Or find you suspect and suspicious, as not-belonging to Them, and turn a cold s...

JeanRichard is at, I think they do more than OK. Best Blomman

Thanks blomman. JeanRichard is a solid brand.

I have handled some of the watches in the past year, and the quality / value aspects are extremely high. I came very close to buying the Highlands Sand model a few years back and regret having passed on it. I do agree about the caseback opening being some...

Yes, the Highlands is a very cool model! :)

Unfortunately no longer in production. Yes, after seeing their novelties, I feel they are on the move! :) Thank you for your input, Michael. Will come back with more novelties soon! Best Blomman

Thanks for the live shots of the JR Terrascope GMT. IMO they were going for a bolder look so the design idea of a broad bezel gives the piece a masculine look, something you want in a sports model. Proportionally the hands are wider to match the bezel so ...

Bold look - but wait!

There is more, you will be surprised how feminine the same case may look! More novelties to come. :) Yes, I had it on for a bit and I didn't notice any problem with the crown. But it is a 44 mm stainless steel case, so you do feel the weight. Not more tha...

My favorite part of the watch are the hands

and given the small movement relative to the larger 44mm case, JR did a pretty good job making the watch look balanced on the dial side. Cheers, Anthony

Yes, I think JR did a good job on the dial...

Would have prefered the closed case back... Best Blomman

Blued GMT hand is drool-worthy....

.. and sturdy construction and look are some of the attraction of the watch. Worth a try! Thanks, Blomman! Ken

You should try this one, Ken!

I had to compare with the 2014 model

 By: MTF : April 9th, 2015-18:36
blomman, Thanks for the 2015 report. I compared with last year's model to se the differences. I could not see the "floating dial appliques" made a difference in the 2015 model compared with this 2014 watch...? The solid caseback was sensible but they also...

Thank you for pointing out that ....

They had some special editions with open case back already last year. About the indexes: Applied on the dial - Suspended on the inside of the bezel - Notice the air between the indexes and the dial? Thank you for your input, MTF! Best Blomman ...

Air "beneath the indices"

 By: MTF : April 10th, 2015-08:36
Ahh....we need to get lower down to see the "air" beneath the suspended indices in the photos. I guess it is more obvious in real-life. Cool. Regards, MTF

interesting offering

Looks good on your wristshot. I agree with DRMW, the strap rubber is pretty cool and a nice fit to take it out in wet environments. This Terrascope GMT is interesting and worth a second look. Thanks Blomman for the photo report. Regards, ED-209

My pleasure, Ed! :)

Yes, definetly worth a second look! :) Best Blomman

Blomman, thanks for the detailed report.

I can't say I am excited by this watch, and the size of the movement bothers me a bit, but I do like some of the design elements (the blue dial cheif among them). Just curious - have they published the list price for these? Best, CaliforniaJed

I haven't received an official price list yet...

But hope to get it soon. The blue dial is very nice. There is another dial that I like even more.... Will post soon! Best Blomman

The watch is nice... dial side!

 By: foversta : April 10th, 2015-15:34
Nothing to say dial side, no surprise, bad or good, it is a nice JR watch. But the view on the Sellita base (I imagine) totally lost in the middle of the case is a no-go for me. A commercial decision but at the end, not a good one. Thanks for the article!...

Thank you for your input, Fx! [nt]

I quite like the grey dial GMT...

 By: andrewluff : April 11th, 2015-08:16
However, I am in agreement when you turn it over... this is a real turn off for me. I have a thing about putting a sapphire case back to actually show something nice and not just because it is expected, the small window and not great finishing on the move...

So much to see in Basel....

Honestly, I did have the chance to see more than two brands properly... Thank you, Andrew! Best Blomman

This is an interesting watch. My concern would be size. 44mm, considering most extreme sports going for fast and light, maybe 44mm is a little overkill, but time will tell. I am sure the case does not need to be so large considering the type of movement i...

I understand your way of thinking

By: blomman Mr Blue : April 21st, 2015-15:08
Yes, some might feel the 44mm steel case is on the heavier side... But just a few years back most brands had 44mm steel sports watches in their collection. Some still do... There is a Terrascope Chronograph in Carbon. I wouldn't be surprised if JR release...

...their cases are cool and i think these are nice casual watches. I must say their new approach seems much more consistent now than the JR models of the earlier days, which often looked like downgraded GP's. However I wasn't aware that they are using ETA...

Yes, I think so!

By: blomman Mr Blue : May 3rd, 2015-13:23
I suspect that JeanRichard still benefit from GP in some ways. If I not misinformed, they still do have some manufactured movements in some of their models. Thank you for your input, Stefan. Best Blomman
