As mentioned, at BaselWorld I had the chance to sit down with JeanRichard and have a closer look at their Novelties of this year.
A lot of new and improved features were added to their watches this year!
But to start from the beginning, the Terrascope line is made for adventures. “The accomplice of explorers of the planet”.
So what complication would be more natural to add to the line but the GMT? Every adventurer and explorer will sooner or later travel, so the need of a second time zone feels like a natural evolution of the Terrascope!
Terrascope GMT, Grey dial, reference 60520-11-101-FBBA
The new GMT function is easy to read visualized by a blue arrow hand with plenty of luminous which makes it easy to read in the dark. 24 hours marking on the inner part of the dial, i.e. the GMT makes one full circle in one day.
The black nickel hour-, minute- and seconds hands are also with luminous material. The seconds hand have red arrow tip. Nice touch to give the watch a small splash of color.
New feature on the dial; the GMT function is not the only new thing on the dial. Another feature that was introduced this year is the suspended indexes. Instead of the normal way of applying the indexes on the dial, JeanRichard has developed a construction where the indexes are suspended on a ring mounted on the inside of the bezel. This will give the illusion of the indexes floating above the dial, enhancing the depth of the dial.
Modular case; the case is the same as earlier, 44 mm modular case which allows JR to combine different material and complications easily into the Terrascope line. Here the case is all stainless steel.
What is new this year is 1) the vertical satin-finished polishing. Gives the watch a very exclusive and sport look!
2) The open case back. For a line that never had open case back before I understand that this is something very nice to be able to show… But personally I am not convinced. I don’t find it very exciting to see a “normal” automatic movement. I would much rather seen a manual movement with really nice finishing or an exceptional automatic movement. OK, to be far – at this price point this is a very nice movement. But my other concern is size of the opening. For a 44 mm watch the opening is quite small, guess it has to do with the size of the movement. Plus, I kind of liked the JR logo that was engraved on the case back before…
Inside is the caliber JR62. Automatic movement with min. 42 hours power reserve. Functions; hours, minutes, seconds, second time zone and date.
The Terrascope GMT also comes in with blue dial –
Rubbergator strap; new is also the strap. A molded rubber strap with alligator pattern. Gives you both the comfort and advantage of a rubber strap, but also the elegance of the alligator. The stitches are another nice detail, adding to the more elegance side.
I say comfort of rubber, first time I tried one of these straps on I could not believe it was rubber! Very soft and supple like a high quality calf skin! But with this one you can swim or go trekking without being afraid of ruin your strap!
Here the hands and indexes are matching the steel case and with matching Rubbergator strap.
The watch comes with a stainless steel folding buckle. There is an option of steel bracelet as well.
I find this new watch from JeanRichard a very nice elegant sports watch! A great offer at a price point where I think they will be able to compete with all the bigger brands in the same range!
My guess is that we will see much more from JeanRichard in the future!
Best
