A (possibly) very naïve post
Date: Jan 04, 2008,06:21 AM - (view entire thread)
OK, so this may come across as probably one seriously naïve post but I’m really rather shocked at a recent discussion in an official Rolex boutique. As a bit of context I’ve got only a very limited interest for the brand (don't own any and not planning to at this stage) but a friend is looking for a Milgauss GV and I’ve agreed to help him from Asia… Went to the Rolex boutique in a major city where the watch is currently in stock and discussed the pricing of the GV… The sales guy showed me the official Rolex price list and it stated that the list was X but that the watch was to be sold at 2X…. double the list price …. Now I can see (though not agree) why an AD would decide to price a limited piece above list, but for the manufacturer, in its very own store, to do this is simply ludicrous in my book… Again, it might be a very naïve viewpoint (and incidentally I can't confirm that each Rolex boutique is 100% own by Rolex, no idea in fact but it appears as such) as I’ve not really chased a piece so limited I had to suffer this situation but I was really taken aback – they control production and impose scalper’s rates… rather shocking. Would be curious to see if I’m just out of touch or this is really quite bad…
