Mid range macro lens - about USD 500. Exploring the movement with a macro lens, and looking at the results in full size on the computer - priceless So much more fun than squinting through a loupe :) ...

Yes the dial is a very nice attaction to the eye

It is very educational and reachable. Thus, learning and playing with it is much easier (and much more affordable if one's wish to go for applied mechanics ! as you can purchase one in any flea market)
I must admit a recent interest for these pocket watches and their movements.
I learnt some things and regretted some aspects of the modern production through them... But that is another story... Best, Nicolas
