Last night at a party, a friend took me aside for advice. Whenever this happens, I presume someone is in jail, in debt, or in need of legal counsel! But, to my delight, she sought advice on a watch purchase. She desires to give a "meaningful" watch to her significant other to celebrate his fiftieth birthday. Her budget: $1000, but I get the feeling she would spend a couple of hundred dollars more for the right watch. The only other criteria she expressed is that she'd like him to be able to wear the watch with a suit. The watch could be vintage or new, quartz or mechanical.
I'm starting to compile a list of suggestions and I welcome your input.
Best,
Jed

Follow the Vintage way: Rolex air King, Omega Connie are the first which come to mind... And the easier to service. Best. Nicolas

...with another vote for a vintage Constellation. It's a nice, dressy watch from a famous-maker that even non-WIS know. She might even be able to find one from the year of her husband's birth (or adjacent to his birth year). Daos

There is a big difference between a gift of a mechanical watch , especially a vintage watch, from a WIS to a non-WIS family member and a gift between 2 non-WIS. How many times have we heard, "Dear, it's March 1, why does it say 29? Please fix it.." "Honey...
Ginger, that is a good reality check.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I do beleive a mint vintage Constellation is outside her price range. I plan to discuss quartz vs. mechanical issues with her at length (though I will certainly attempt to steer her toward a mechanical watch). While a vint...
