Small Steps … My Journe Journey

I credit François-Paul Journe with my interest in ‘modern’ horology. Seven years ago I picked up a watch magazine while transiting Singapore airport and sat on the plane mesmerised by pictures of the Tourbillon Souverain. Daydreaming about that watch certainly helped pass the time on the return flight home, and it has been my grail amongst grail watches ever since.   I remained patient and happy to wait until the day I would have my own tourbillon. But I recently decided to put my ...

Sculpting Brass, Sculpture and Watchmaking

Sculpting Brass, Sculpture and WatchmakingAs I was working on the first part for my next watch, the lower plateau for the tourbillon, I was struck by how similar this is to making a sculpture from stone; removing the portions of the stone that don't belong to David. Please don't call me out on artistic prouesse in comparison to Michelangelo on this.  But lets play along on the methods.image: Wikipedia To see the rest click here ...

Sydney Purists GTG

I always knew watches would be the death of me, but now I think it will be the watch get-togethers that will do me in. After just about recovering from the 3.30am finish in Melbourne two days ago, three hardcore Purists talked till sunrise after a delightful meal at the Quay Restaurant in Sydney.   Again I will let the courses, wines and watches speak for themselves … Fresh milk curd with broth Sashimi tuna pearls, caviar, wasabi flowers, shaved green lipped abalone, oyster cream ...

PuristSPro interviews John Simonian of Westime

Passion and profession – It's rare that one comes across an individual who experiences one relative to the other.  Such a dynamic is reserved for the fortunate ones, the ones that don't count the hours before the end of the work day.  For John Simonian, not only does he not count the hours, he adds to them by arriving early and staying late.  One can almost say that he has no concept of time when it comes to work.  This is a bit ironic for a man who has a $440,000 pocket watch atta...

Jacquemarts: Little Big Men Striking

Jacquemarts: Little Big Men Striking Marcus Hanke explores the history behind the tiny automatons on the dials of Ulysse Nardin's repeaters and hour strikers. My research for this article started nearly nine years ago. Already the first Ulysse Nardin catalogue I held in my hands some twelve years ago, confronted me with the term "jacquemart". However, the reference works at my disposition were no help, even my Enyclopedia Britannica did not mention the term. Internet search engines like Webcrawler and Yah...

To celebrate its 150th anniversary this year, TAG Heuer announced a rework of the regulation system which was nearly unchanged s...

Photo report on Roger Dubuis 2010 novelties presentation in Singapore.

Since being acquired by Richemont two years ago Roger Dubuis is slowly gaining recognition for the remarkable technical developments, in an short space of time, that occurred since its founding in 1995. Ironically its rapid expansion was the cause of problems, like over production and spotty quality control, prior to the Richemont acquisition. But now run by Richemont employees (the current CEO is former IWC while the COO is ex-Cartier), the brand is back on track. Since 2008 the changes in the ...
