At the launch at Morgan's factory in Malvern last week, Charles Morgan explained that he bought a Hublot several years ago and fell in love with it. He later became friendly with Jean-Claude Biver at Hublot … and the rest is history. Those of us who were privileged to attend the launch in Malvern were fortunate to have a tour around the entire Morgan factory with Charles Morgan as our guide - and to be taken for a spin in one of three Morgans. classic and modern. After buying his first Hublot, Charles Morgan realised the similarity between the craftsmanship of the watchmaker
and that of the skilled workers who build his cars by hand, 15 a week,
from wood - yes wood - and aluminium. Each one is built almost entirely
by hand by carpenters and panel beaters and, with the exception of the
classic models, each one has a lable on it bearing the name of the
owner who has ordered it from the moment the first parts are assembled.
There is no conveyor belt to be found in this factory - when it's time
to move a partly finished chassis from one part of the factory to
another it's pushed there by hand. Because of the materials used for their construction these cars are very light, and yet some have engines up to 5 litres. This year marks the 100th
anniversary of this privately owned marque which is still run by
descendants of the founder. Notice any similarities between Morgan and
a few of the most respected watch houses?
