I share the same thinking as well. I never have interest in Patek’s sports offerings. To me the quintessential Patek watches are the PCC and MR, and maybe the world time.
But market tide is turning. It’s almost like Porsche. When Porsche first started making SUVs, old timers were upset, that Porsche should only make sports cars. In fact, there were Porsche clubs that doesn’t allow Cayenne owners into the club, because it’s not deemed as a real Porsche. But the SUV line was such a huge success for Porsche, I think started last year, Porsche now makes more SUVs than sports cars. One could say Porsche is a SUV company that also makes sports cars.
Patek is a classic complication company, Nautilus (and later Aquanaut) is a entry level watch but now became the hottest watch to get. The way the market is going, I wouldn’t be surprised if one day Patek will be making more Nautilus and Aquanauts than their classic watches.

5712 discontinued ?
By: watch lawyer : October 17th, 2018-23:55
Any rumours on this ? I have been trying to get one on the bracelet from grey dealers. Some of them saying discontinued and asking over 100 percent mark up. Very confused as to what to do.
No! It’s just officially artificial shortage.
By: datograph : October 18th, 2018-00:14
Demand is extremely high and Thierry Stern doesn’t like the current situation. What to do? Buy another piece, one that led Patek to where they are now. Or just buy from another brand, Patek still isn’t the end.
Unfortunately

Not everyone thinks like that, that’s why prices kept going up.
Totally wrong. Please do your homework!
By: datograph : October 18th, 2018-01:12
Plus Thierry Stern stated that they don’t want to be a ”One-Watch-Company“... like their colleagues from Le Brassus.

Hmmm, they clearly needed a sports watch in the 70's.
By: Jay (Eire) : October 18th, 2018-04:30
And they clearly thought they need another reference many years ago too (Aquanaut). And I understand of course what you refer to in terms of the last few years, it helped materially that the Nautilus / Aquanaut line was there. However this recent boom / h...

By: RGS : October 18th, 2018-04:32
Lange is a Richemont company - they don't need a sports watch. And it is not in their DNA. Patek and AP are stand alone companies and the Nautilus and RO have been part of the DNA for decades now. So, i don't think Lange will produce a steel sports watch ...

Classic complication watches sitting at every AD that I went to, not so sure TS is very happy with the fact that they might be tipping towards becoming AP.
strategy
By: Peter : October 18th, 2018-05:55
if i am not mistaken then AP strategy is to totally compartmentalize the RO and ROO lines and to relegate the rest of their collection to junk-bond status, and to cancel AD contracts for boutique sales. correct?
You will have to wait until SIHH 2019.
By: Pretty Boy : October 18th, 2018-06:03
To control supply and prices by kicking out some ADs and increasing the number of boutiques is a good thing, IMO. They still work with Bucherer and Rüschenbeck and some small independent ADs here in Germany.
Complication anyone?
By: RGS : October 18th, 2018-06:19
In recent years, PP has made an effort to move both new and existing customers towards the Complications line (5905P, 5960G, 5524R, 5524G). All this references have a larger case size and/or an original dial color and strap configuration. An overall sport...

Most of the current PP dress chronos and annuals and perpetuals can be found advertised at below list. I think that TS will need to look into his distribution model. It is not enough that they restrict the supply of the SS Nautilus and Aquanaut refs. I th...

It makes perfect sense to me; I would be surprised if it does NOT happen. The fat days of the 2000s and early 2010s are now being corrected. Except for us consumers...the prices are not coming down. ☹️
Limiting production

That help the supply and demand. Won’t that make it worse ?
I don’t think PP wants to solve the Nautilus/Aquanaut supply problem
By: Joepny : October 19th, 2018-08:07
The demand is too great for those sports type references. And I think they know the risk of overexposure there. They would be worse off by flooding the market with thousands of new steel watches to meet the demand. Those watches will trade hands forever a...
Simply following Rolex’ lead.
By: Arie - Mr Orange : October 19th, 2018-11:26
And AP is doing the same too now. It’s all about hyping up the brand. It’s smart. Long term thinking. It will make them money. Seriously; don’t doubt the Swiss ability and know how in making mega bucks.
Gray dealers smoke and mirrors talk.
By: jonrus : October 18th, 2018-03:39
They have to say anything to justify their exorbitant price. Spread rumors of fear to recoup their costs and make money.
Curious
By: watch-er : October 18th, 2018-07:53
Patek could not give the Nautilus away for years. Really a poor copy of the Royal Oak. Now only sport watches in SS sell. It may well signal the final gasps of a redundant industrial product, now that everybody carries some type of device which tells them...
