Soon to be released Citizen high-end mechanical

May 23, 2010,02:01 AM

For its 80th anniversary, Citizen will unveiled its first high-end mechanical timepiece on May 28. Part of The Citizen range, which currently consists of only high-end, ultra-accurate quartz watches, this new mechanical model is conservative in design but appears to be an very high quality product. It comes with a 10 year warranty.

CTY57-1272

The movement is an entirely new in-house calibre, even the hairspring is in-house, backed up by the experience of having produced 100 million mechanical movements to date.

Some highlights:

- Steel case and bracelet with Duratect scratch-resistant treatment and polished with Zaratsu technique

- 37 mm diameter and 11.3 mm height

- White or black dial

- Cal. 0910 movement with 42 hour power reserve and daily rate of -5 to +10 seconds

- 10 year warranty with two free inspections during the period

- Retail of JPY294,000

Availability appears to be Japan only. Nonetheless I very much looking forward to seeing this in the metal.

Maybe just a notch below...

Omega right now. I imagine that will be a Miyota mechanical/automatic movement, not COSC-certified (thank God!), but to their (Japanese/Chinese) certification specs. Not exactly a Grand Seiko-class watch, but very nice for Citizen. Thanks! =:^D

From what I understand it is a new calibre

not just a decorated version of the Miyota automatic in low-end watches. From photos it appears that it will similar to Grand Seiko both in terms of movement and external finish. - SJX

Eager to see it for real :)

Let's see if the Europeans can match the 10 year warrenty with the two free inspections. I bet it will be like pulling teeth to get the established European players to match this... they probably never will . Mike

Very brave...but not sure if...

...not sure if this is the direction Citizen should take. I would have much preferred to see them try their hand at 'mechanising' their Campanola range. Now THAT would be exciting!

Japan only...

I like the sound of the 10 year warranty. But, I am still very interested in the Grand Seiko. Ultimately, if I were to choose a fine Japanese timepiece, I may be leaning towards the Grand Seiko, since the GS is already an established brand and already has...

I like it a lot.

It is great when companies do something smart, tasteful and high quality, which is true to their history. The price is reasonable too. I am sure this will be a very high quality watch.

Classic & beautiful but

it's too tiny.

This is not Citizen's first "high end" mechanical...

... and just perhaps competition not just for the Grand Seikos. D.
