Vulcain New Collection 2010 and Mission

Aug 11, 2010,08:43 AM

Last fortnight, Mr Bernard Fleury, CEO of Manufacture des Montres Vulcain SA. , was in town to present the 2010 Collection.

As some may remember, the company was acquired by the Swiss-based Excellence Holding Group in December 2009, and was renamed as Manufacture des Montres Vulcain SA.

A short chat with Mr Bernard Fleury just before the dinner event.  He did not disclose how much shareholding when asked.  As for what the company will be focusing in, he mentioned after the acquisition, the Group and he will concentrate to boost brand equity by intensifying its communication and continue to develop more innovative products based on its well-known Cricket Calibre, and  to enter new markets later.

For the communication initiatives, Vulcain will remind the world that its nickname was "Watch for Presidents", which previous statesmen including Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon B. Johnson had their Vulcain watches during the period of 1951 to 1964.

As the number of the Presidents are quite limited and also dependent on the geographical markets the company is planning to enter, Vulcain may consider approaching Presidents of Corporations.   Will be interesting to watch who are they.

Now for The Vulcain 2010 collection consists of four models ....

Starting with one which is relevant to the US President, the limited 300-piece Cricket X-Treme Automatic "Air Force 1 - All Black".

44mm case and rated water resistance to100m.  According to the specifications, it is a black treated titanium and steel piece.
I guessed the caseband is in titanium as it is known to enhance the volume of the sound (alarm).

The black treatment is likely to be PVD.

Above is the winding crown and the alarm pushbutton.

Paired with integrated black vulcanised rubber strap and a black titanium safety folding clasp.

With Vulcain Caliber Cricket Automatic V-21, beating at 18,000 VPH and a power reserve of 42 hours.  Two barrels, one to for time-keeping
and another just for the alarm, which provides a chime duration of 20 seconds.

Next is a model for the Ladies - The Golden Heart ...

39mm steel case and decorated with cut-out white Mother-of-pearl dial with black rhodium plated indexes and well-paired with a set
of white aliigator strap.

Movement is Vulcain Cricket V-18, manual-winding, which seems to be going against the grain, as most ladies would prefer an
automatic.  One thing, which is smartly done - the straps are with easy-change pin to facilitate quick-change of straps to match the
ladies outfits.

Next is the Anniversary Heart Automatic ...

Previous year, the Anniversary Heart was with manual winding Cal V-18.

This year collection comes with automatic winding Calibre Vulcain Automatic V-28.

For the 42mm steel case, it has two dial variations - the silver or black dial.

The above silver dial with blued indexes and hands.

Calibre Vulcain Cricket Automatic V-28, 18,000vph and has a power reserve of 42 hours, and alarm duration of 20 seconds.

Next is the steel case with black dial and rhodium plated indexes.

The Anniversary Heart Automatic also comes with a rose gold case option with silver dial and blue indexes.

The following is the Anniversary Heart Automatic Calender ...

This 42mm steel case Anniversary Heart Automatic with Calender has two dial variations - the above charcoal grey rehaut or the white.

The interesting piece about this model, is the translucent dial created by metal-plating the sapphire dial on the reverse-side to create
the sand-blasted effect.

Same family as the new Cricket X-Treme Automatic Air Force 1 "All Black" above, which is also limited to 300 pieces and housed
the Vulcain Cricket Calibre V-21.

Hi Ben Will ask about the old Cal 120. As for the sound, the new pieces has sharper tone while the vintage sounded 'hollow' (sorry, not able to get the correct vocab) but loud. Kong

Thanks, Kong.

...good description "Hollow". That's the sound. Angry, hollow rattle. No tone to it. Good as an alarm, though... Thanks.

Great coverage

I don't recall any speech, but Mr Fleury and Mr Tan went round speaking to nearly everyone from cocktail and during dinner. Have you seen those cloisonne pieces? Kong

Hi Martin Thanks for the elaborate reply. I like the Anniversary Heart Automatic Calendar. The skeletonised version does not look natural to me, and the alarm-ring, with the printed-minute setting is a bit crowded. A simpler proportional space-out dash-ma...
