Nautische Instrumente Mühle at BaselWorld 2012

A brand that is not evoqued very often, but is certainly worthy, is Nautische Instrumente Mühle (Mühle Nautical Instruments) from Glasshütte.  Their history, since 1868, is in making ships instruments and chronometers, which is still a part of their business.  Their iconic wrist watch is the S.A.R. Rescure-Timer watch that they developped to the specifications of the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger DGzRS (German Maritime Search and Rescue Service) in the 1990s.  In contrast to typical "divers" watches this watch specified by professional divers is relatively small with very rounded rubber bezel.  This was because the typical big divers watches with sharp edges injures neoprene suits.  And as one can see it is not necessary to have a huge dial to have good readability.  Now more that 20 years after its design this watch is still in use by the DGzRS.

Mühle now has expanded to sporty watches for many application areas.  Utility and reliability are at the top of their demands so the movements are all from ETA, some using modules from Dubois Duprés and completed with certain parts of their own manufacture such as the fine regulation.

These watches are not haute horlogerie but reliable tool watches and good honest value for your money.

At Basel they only talked of ETA movements. Of course we know that Sellita has done most of their work customising ETA movements, but with the recent situation of ETA supply where they really are now I don't know. Mühle did say they are planning to i...
