The Art and History Museum, Neuchâtel

While this visit to the beautiful Art and History Museum on the edge of Lake Neuchâtel would well be at home in TimeOut, I have decided to post it on HoMe due to the three famous Jaquet Droz automata that are permanently housed inside and Ken’s recent coverage of the modern J*D Bird Repeater. And the fact that there is a little of the watchmaking history of this important area of Switzerland housed inside.

Actually I found the gallery spaces very relaxing; a true oasis. The juxtaposition of modern, gothic and art nouveau is very interesting and the building itself, with the central staircase and the frescos of Léo-Paul Robert, illuminated by the light from the stained glass windows, is lovely to explore.

The three automata, the Writer, the Musician and the Draughtsman were built between 1768 and 1774. But it is best to see them in action in the video. The Draughtsman ... The Writer ... ...

Yes!

...multi-dial wall clock? I loved all the displays, especially the seconds and what looks like an astrological dial. Such beautiful art, and architecture, plus watches! I'd really like to visit one day! Cheers, Daos
