The (disappointing?) results of the 2013 Concours international de chronométrie

Nov 06, 2013,15:41 PM

The concours ended with somewhat disappointing results. Interestingly, Tissot beat everyone (and even many of the previous tourbillons) to win the top 2 in the non-tourbillon section. Even more disappointingly  only one of the 7 tourbillon entires finished (entires from prestigious makers including Laurent Ferrier, Greubel Forsey, and L.U.C. Chopard did not even pass the torture tests).

An absolute monster of accuracy (878 and 850 pts.) improving on their 764 pt 2011 result with the 2824.

Encouragingly, two of the twelve student entires (from Mathieu Douik and Maxime Bettenelli of CIFOM passed.

the concours itself is disappointing

Lack of interest from the brands, very few contenders, this concours is fading into obscurity. Who really cares about these results? And it is a pity since chronometrie should be the ultimate objective of each and every brand. Fx

Conflict of interest

 By: Ed. W : November 6th, 2013-15:58
I think the concours is already exercising tact in only publishing the top 3 results and not mentioning the losers. It's also often argued that accuracy is not important but I think while it's not the only factor, it's still very important. I guess brands...

Strange that someone could even think about arguing.....

 By: Sandgroper : November 6th, 2013-22:52
that accuracy is not important for a time-piece??!! It would be like arguing that taste is not important for a wine! Bizarre I tell you, very bizarre!! Cheers, Francois

What he said!! (nt)

Bonjour FX. Who really care for these results?......

I for one! Definitely! We are talking horology are we not? Cheers Francois from Down Under

Not a disappointment, a lesson.

While it's not exciting that a VERSION of an inexpensive movement has one the contest again, it shows that a lot of what we all love about movements has nothing to do with actually making them more precise timekeepers. Also, as we were discussing recently...

Controversial

 By: Ed. W : November 6th, 2013-17:43
This is really a point of persistent controversy (at least, as controversial as this watch collecting thing gets). There was a bit of upset as a result of the richard lange performing slightly poorly (I can't find the old thread). I think that regardless ...

I couldn't agree more

 By: rnaden : November 6th, 2013-17:48
While I appreciate fine watchmaking, the timepiece needs to perform its primary duty well. It annoys me when my "higher end" watches with in house movements performs worse than a cheaper version with a well calibrated ETA movement, especially given the pr...

+10 Ed. Definitely and totally agree with you!

"polishing technique"

 By: small-luxury-world : November 7th, 2013-06:33
If only they would do this, at least. Maybe a more cost effective one ... for even higher price ...

In 2009, the JLC Master tourbillon and Gyrotourbillon were clear winners.

 By: amanico : November 6th, 2013-23:55
So, in a certain way, you are wrong. But here I agree with you is that accuracy is all about the talent of the Watchmaker in charge of the movement setting. And I have to give kudos to Tissot, here. Best, Nicolas

I remember those results well

 By: Ed. W : November 7th, 2013-05:02
now if only they would enter again with their non-tourbillon watches. It's quite impressive that the most affordable tourbillon was also the most accurate (non-exotic) tourbillon.

it is all about the skill in setting the movement, IMO.

 By: amanico : November 8th, 2013-05:06
That is what I have been told by the watchmakers at JLC. Best, Nicolas

Thank you Ed. very interesting. It makes me want....

 By: Sandgroper : November 6th, 2013-22:42
a Tissot now and the watch is very nice looking indeed. I see on the picture between the right lug and the crown there seem to be a piece of metal?! Do you happen to know what it is or is this just the picture? My next watch will definitely be a Tissot an...

I don't think there's any metal there, may just be a glitch

 By: Ed. W : November 8th, 2013-12:25
They did eventually bring the Le Locle chronometer (winner of the 2009 concours) to the market so it'll be interesting to see if that happens with this one. However, the previous watch used a 2824 and this is a different ETA caliber so I'm not sure what'l...

The Master Tourbillon and Gyrotourbillon, winners of the 2009 Edition

 By: amanico : November 6th, 2013-23:53
Did much better, in their category! I agree with Sandgroper here... Chronometry ( then accuracy ) should be a top motivation for the brands. Best, Nicolas

Interesting results.

 By: VMM : November 7th, 2013-02:11
Don't know how the brands are in involved in this concours, but as an open event I guess all of them are free to go there and show what they can do. And of course, accuracy, should be the goal to all of them, that's what this is all about, isn't it? Thank...

Disappointing...?

By: blomman Mr Blue : November 7th, 2013-12:23
Maybe, but not surprising! A brand with a rich history as Tissot... Antimagnetic... Automatic... Calendar... Chronograph... Chronometre... And of course, Worldtimer... I realize that it hurts a bit for us who paied a lot more money for a less accuracy... ...

Damn you! You finally got the 33.3 from Tissot?

 By: amanico : November 7th, 2013-12:42
What a collection, my friend! I am amazed, in the best possible way! Best, Nicolas

No, not the Cal 33.3

By: blomman Mr Blue : November 12th, 2013-03:16
If I am not missinformed, this is the CH27 (Omega 320?). But as you know, chronographs is not my strong suit... Will try to find out more. Thank you, my friend! Best Blomman

"wakeup call"

 By: small-luxury-world : November 8th, 2013-00:02
Wow, once more deep knowledge and great taste proven by you. No surprise :-) If we don´t talk about vintage pieces the wakeup call won´t help us (WIS´s) that much and the industry (in general, even when there are some minor exceptions) won´t listen, becau...

Thank you for your kind words, Oliver! :)

By: blomman Mr Blue : November 12th, 2013-03:21
But, I guess you are right, not much help for WIS if youre not into vintage watches... Or, maybe that IS the wakeup call?! That it is time to start looking into vintage watches...? ;) Best Blomman

I think I have the pair to your chronograph.

 By: SteveW : November 8th, 2013-01:36
I picked it up for quite a reasonable price some years ago. When it was serviced the watchmaker couldn't identify the movement (fairly young chap). Is it one of the recognized prewar ébauches or something they developed themselves? ...

Very nice!

Mine is after the WWII. Sold in a small Swedish town, Alingsås in 1949. Best Blomman

Of course timing means nothing without beauty

 By: Mostel : November 7th, 2013-21:44
and I would not call this Tissot Beautiful... but it is a very good looking chronometre. I'll venture it's got an affordable price tag... touche Tissot.

"timing means nothing without beauty"

 By: small-luxury-world : November 7th, 2013-23:53
Indeed there is a lack of beauty, at least in the details :-) But for what it is, it is nice - for sure! Could we find one of those top notch regulated Tissot´s at an AD? Probably not, not for the price asked. Can I get a regular one and then I try to fin...

The positive lesson here is...

 By: Ornatus-Mundi : November 8th, 2013-03:27
that you do not need a lot money to buy a stellar performing piece. Indeed, you need very little actually. So if you are for chronometric value, forget all these coaxials, silicons, constant forces etc and buy something proven . This once more demonstrate...

So what?

 By: Brandon Skinner : November 15th, 2013-10:30
So am I to assume that if I go to the store and buy this same model Tissot it will be just as accurate as the one submitted to the Concours? What is the sample size of watches from each brand, just one watch or did Tissot bring a dozen of them? It's not h...
