The Fascination of Watchmaking
Dec 07, 2013,12:01 PM
I need a new watch...
So I have started making it.
I think I have found what it is, that fascination.
It is going from the mechanical design to "the real thing"
I have been working on this design on and off for the last 2 years or so.
Its time has come.
Throw on the milling machine and GO!
Raw material, brass
The bridges, dial side
Bridge side
The plate, bridge side
Steel parts milled out of 0.25mm and 0.5mm carbon steel
First attempts at placing parts
The fun will continue !

I absolutely adore your in-progress pictures and can't wait to see more. One question - is your mill cnc controlled or do you mill by hand? Ondrej

I have moved up to CNC, I make less stupid mistakes that way. But even with CNC it is possible to make stupid mistakes. :) Don

Even though all my machines are manual and i probably wouldn't know what to do with the cnc, even if i got one, i get what you mean with making stupid mistakes :) However, to be honest, seeing your results makes me want to try one. Thank you, i will be lo...

It's exciting to get to see the watch come to life from the very beginning stages. Regards, Jon

Hello DonCorson, This is an unusual look into watchmaking indeed, not often are you invited to look over the shoulder of a Horologist in quite this way. I have had the good fortune of being a watchmaker my whole life, and I can appreciate this kind of wor...
This is amazing...

Two little technical questions
By: Goldenlutin : December 12th, 2013-13:25
Hello, I have two questions: If I understand your construction right (as I see no differential in it), you will built a watch with only one escapement connected to the hands (hours and minutes) and use a second one "solely" to resonate or synchronize with...
Resonance
By: DonCorson : December 13th, 2013-06:20
Hi Goldenlutin, Your analysis is correct. Have you seen my reports about resonance on the WatchTech forum? Please look here: Part 3 will be coming soon. I am hoping to be able to confirm these simulations in reality when the watch is finished. Best, Don...
Thanks for the links

Hi Don, Unfortunately I did not. Thanks a lot for the links. Your articles are incredibly interesting though I am still a bite skeptical about "resonance" in a wristwatch. Really can't wait to read your real-life experience. Best, Goldenlutin
