Thoughts on the new FP Journe Octa Lune dial

Feb 04, 2015,22:10 PM

This is just pure speculation on my part, but...

...my thoughts as to why this new dial is so much more pleasing to the eye than the original:

It is interesting that the moonphase circle and seconds subdial are not level with the moonphase sitting lower, but this actually works better visually as the moonphase cutout is top heavy and is better balanced this way. Plus, the emphasis of the link with the main time dial (diagonal line) with the tilt of the cutout strengthens the idea that everything (seconds, power reserve, moonphase) is centrally connected to the main time display.

What do you think? Any other design elements that I am missing here?

It would be interesting to see a similar exercise performed on the 'free space' around the dial. Cheers, pplater.

I like what you've done here!

To complete the excellent analysis, have you considered doing a similar markup of the original for comparison? I think the cleaner dial is an improvement, even if I miss the little bit of guilloche work.

Great geometric decomposition
