A quick view on the Longines Diver Vintage

At the Beginning of the 60ies, or at the end of the 50ies, some manufactures released very nice Diving Watches, like Vulcain with its Nautical, JLC with the Deep Sea Alarm, Enicar with the Super Divette, the Sherpa, etc, with this specificity that there were 2 crowns watches, with an inside bezel. Of course, I'm not saying that the diving watches appeared only in the beginning of the Sixties, as Panerai launched in 1936 the Cali, and some famous brands were competiting on this thema since 1953...

Romain Gauthier - Collection Prestige

After a nine month wait, my Romain Gauthier Collection Prestige finally arrived, hand delivered by Romain Gauthier himself (not sure why he couldn't just give me a discount and send it via FedEx).  As many of you are familiar, Romain’s Collection Prestige comes in four “flavours” – two in rose gold, one in white gold and one in platinum.   I selected the rose gold with champagne dial primarily for the gilt frost finishing that Romain applies to thi...

Visit to AP Clearwater

week or so ago, my wife and I had the good fortune to be given a tour of the AP Service Center in Clearwater, FL, by the Director, Gilles Vincent. An enthusiastic and charming man, he gave me permission to post the photos I took. He would pose for a photograph only with me, but he didn't say anything about cropping myself out of the photo, which I've done: After gaining entry (which even those delivering our watches for service are not permitted to do), one meets the Customer Service staff, who are th...

Lending a Hand: How Heuer was saved by an arms dealer

Lending a Hand - How Heuer was saved by an arms dealer By Su JiaXian       Before TAG, it was Heuer.   Founded by Edouard Heuer in 1860 at St. Imier, Heuer specialised in stopwatches and chronographs. The company made a significant contribution to horology with the invention of the oscillating pinion (also known as cam) in 1886, which replaced the more expensive column wheel and is the most prevalent type of mechanical chronograph today.   Click here  to c...

Guy Ellia, does it ring a bell?

According to a watch-executive, a few companies in the region have battled for 3 years vying for the distributorship of Guy Ellia.   Last month, Sincere Watch Limited (Singapore & Malaysia) got the distributorship for the brand, Guy Ellia. Understand that Guy Ellia is very selective in choosing their retailers and he wants to maintain a certain positioning of status and prestige. From his list of retailers, the focus is Middle East and Europe, including Greece and Russia.  USA ha...

An Evening With Stepan Sarpaneva

Mr Sarpaneva dropped by Kuala Lumpur to host a dinner for the lucky enthusiasts who ordered pieces from him and also to share with us the story behind the Sarpaneva watches. The dinner was held at one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in KL, Hajime.Stepan Sarpaneva. His watches came in birch boxes made in Finland. Each box had a unique grain pattern and were very smooth to the touch. The cover was held closed with magnetic fixtures. The new owners slowly opening their boxes with great anticipation...

Purists London GTG - Report Part 1 - The Arrival

Firstly, I want to say that I thought yesterday's GTG was one of the best gatherings of that type that I have attended, and I would like to thanks everyone who attended, Simon & everyone from the JLC Boutique and Marie & Caroline for making the day a special one. We had 22 people who spent five or six hours together sharing their enjoyment and experiences of a common passion, with no egos or oneupmanship. I truly believe that other parts of society could learn a lot from GTGs such as this, where people of ...

Dial printing 101

Today I had my dial printed, here a little pictural introduction to dial printing.Dial printing is traditionally done by transfer printing, also known as tampon printing. The ink is transfered from an engraved steel cliché, where it remains in the engraved recesses after being wiped off of the flat surface, to the dial.  The transferring agent, the tampon, is made of gelatine or silicon.  I am having my dial printed at a shop doing this traditional transfer printing as it has been done for the...

Having A Look At Hermès

A few weeks back, we had the pleasure of attending a watch showcase by Hermès at their Kuala Lumpur Pavilion Boutique. The Cape Cod Grand Hours comes in two limited editions of 171 in rose gold and 171 in white gold; th...

BULGARI Diagono Calibro 303

Very rarely am I excited about "more conventional " watches, but there are times when I come across something that I must share. Usually it would be some way out wristwatch from over the horizons of imagination. And with some 6 digit price tag to boot. But no...the Bulgari Caliber 303 is one watch that is a 100% alternative contender to take on the AP Offshore, the Rolex Daytona and any chronograph with ruggen intentions upto and above $20,000 in US currency. I never expected this to come from Bulgari...

The Maharajah and the Lighter: The Story of Cartier and Richemont

The Maharajah and the Lighter - The Story of Cartier and Richemont By Su JiaXian   According to the infamous list published annually by Forbes magazine, South African Johann Rupert is worth $3.8 billion, much of it stemming from his controlling stake in Compagnie Financière Richemont SA, the Swiss-based holding company that owns a string of luxury brands.
