Debethune pictures from the technical drawings DB24

By: bernard cheong (registered) Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

OK gentlemen. I can't really imagine any women wanting to read this after my "Hublot Big Bang King" below, as in

home.watchprosite.com

but this one...is for those who really do like movements AND a big wtch, and I really do like THIS DB24, and next to the "king from Hublot", this is the exact opposite, size is retained as an attraction. No Patek type of conservative BS here..chuckles, no offense to Patek!

Now for the very exciting parts and bits...

And this is what watch making of this century is to me..

Look at case construct...always an important facet of watchmaking to me. I feel that for series productions, the movements are sometimes less interesting...the cases however, are very very costly, and are of course, more visually assesable to the owner..and of great tactile importance.

Now..the dial:

Remember my very great interest in the Bulgari 303? I am still highly recomending people to look at that watch, this one, the DB24 is of a much higher price, but not only is the dial incredible, the movement is also 100x more complex to make and design. Price? More than 5x more than a 303. So...

 A simpler dial..

But look at the very interesting "Bauhaus" , well not exactly, but similar..red and black display..

Now..THIS is why I want any, any DB watch...the spider like balance wheel!!!

So I have not lost my head over the Hublot Big Bang King, it is a watch that I MUST buy because it allows FUN.

This DB24, is a serious watch, also something I must have. It compliments a series of relevant watches that are , to me, significant statements from the industry that serious work, and not "just marketing" to make money, is still in existence.

I respect the folk at DeBethune. The work is not for everyone because the prices are not affordable, generally speaking. The essence of such good work at more down to earth prices, are found on the Bulgari 303 today. Minus the amazing movement you see here.

But if finances allow, then THIS is a watch to go look at!

The again, if a purer, none conformist view is desired..with no round case and hands..then the MB&F 2, or wait for MB&F 3...

however, the DB24 is, to me, a super incredible watch that is well rounded in BOTH aesthetic appearance and movement construct.

This is impressive

stuff. Is the watch as big as the Bang King?

I remember reading about some fellow purist dislike trendy watches, the diehard PP type. Maybe this will make them eat their words.

Thanks Bernard.

WOW

I bet Nicolas will go crazy nuts with this post!

This is a very interesting timepiece. And that spider balance wheel is really something unique.

Kudos Bernard!

Hope you or Nicolas (or both smile better) will be able to put your hands on those beautys.

It's big

By: aaronm (registered) Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

I've played with one, although sans-caliper so I don't know exact sizes, but it is big, perhaps 46mm.  Bauhaus is not even close one this one, it's Form for its own sake, with the Function adapted to the form.  Now I happen to quite like much of the form, although I could do with a 3/4 scale and without all that dialog on the face, but.....

Bernard i am wondering....

Out of all the different model of DB24, which one do you prefer?
Because i never see one in person, and DB24 has been growing a lot on me
From DeBethune website, I see there are 4 different type of DB24.

I totally agree with you, Bernard

When I saw it in the flesh, I fell immediately in love with this DB..

This is a Techincal, original, and beautiful watch...

Can't say anything better than what you wrote.

But I think that if we are in love with such a watch, that's because we're a bit Freakie, don't you think? LOL

For me, this is the Freak of the Year, and a very nice one, for sure!

Best, my friend.

I'm happy to know that you weren't that serious with the Hublot...LOL

you should be banned! I was just settling on a very tempting, but in comparison with De Bethune quite conservative watch - your post reminded me on how fascinating the intensive study of horology really is - as De Bethune does. The pity is that the prices are far, far away from what I currently would justify. But how could I go back?

I still very fondly remember the reception I got when I visited them in 2005/2006:

(Jean-Claude Cochet, Denis Flageollet and myself at the De Bethune manufacture)

I love this watch

I discovered it in my first trip around the independents websites and  I even cut out some cardboard and string to try to imagine it on my wrist.   It was too big to even fit comfortably in my palm.     And as for the difference between the Hublot and this, please excuse the USA sports comparison, but the one is a WWE wrestling goon and the other an NFL All Pro Defensive End.

De Bethune is really

interesting. Their horological pursuit is something I really appreciate....its a manufacture to really keep your eyes on...... even though I must say I still need to warm up to the looks of this one (Ive not yet seen it in the titanium). The look is BRUTAL and it is BIG...I know the good doctor likes watches to be EXTREME....but like all watches it must be seen..........

I just re-read the article on De Bethune written by Magnus Bosse and it really is a great article . Its a "must read"!!

best regards
