TAG Heuer Grand Carrera Calibre 8 RS Grande-Date GMT (Singapore Limited Edition)

By: Kong (registered) Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 - Photo Nav: View All 14 photo(s)

Took some pictures of the Calibre 8 RS ( rotating system)  Grande-Date GMT (Singapore Limited Edition) which was announced last week.

This LE version of 150 pcs only is to commemorate next  month Singapore Grand Prix and the world first night race.
(To read the press release please click here )

This piece is a working prototype, and nothing beats seeing the real piece .

Here we go .........

The colour scheme is British Racing Green.  It is also one of the corporate colour of Tag Heuer.
The main point for the green colour theme is 'get away' from the typical red.

Besides the second hand and the GMT marker are green, the straps are dark green with green stiching too.  Pretty nice.

The dark dial and bezel are supposedly to signify night ( as it will be a night race smile )

The 42.5 mm diameter  SS case is well-made.
The bezel could be PVD...yet to be verifed.
Screw down crown (with crown protector), and it is for adjustment of the time and dates.  When crown is out, the movement hacks.

The strap-ends are shaped to seamlessly meet the casing thus leaving no gap between the lugs and the straps
when worn.  See wrist-shots below.

The Rotating GMT(2nd time zone) System is at the 6'o clock position.

Understand the RS range is adopting some areas of  haute-horlogerie finishing...

1. All surface are fine-brushed finished except for the subtle high gloss curved facetted horns (4 lug areas).  A very well-finished case!

2. The curved faceted hour-markers with double finishings and

3. The hand-applied grand date window is well finished.

The chapter ring on the dial with spiral effect is not visible in my pictures.

A beautiful view from the Tag Heuer office.  However too high to view the race...could use binoculars though.

Côtes de Genève on the rotor, screw and polished beveling and perlage on the bridges.
However on the see-through sapphire, the centre split portion with the Tag Heuer logo blocks the wheel...even without it,
the rotor still obstructs.
Perhaps the caseback symbolises something related to car, like the dashboard or even a speedometer.
I'm guessing here.

COSC-certified automatic movement Calibre 8RS.
Water resistance to 100m.

Deployant buckle with push-button release.

Double AR coated sapphire.

Several wrist-shots ....

On a lady's wrist. Thanks Fiona smile

On a gentleman's wrist ...thanks Alvin smile

It sits well on the wrist and looks good.

Take a look at the work and try it on next month when it launches... you may be in for a surprise.

GMT function

By: BDLJ (registered) Friday, August 8th, 2008

Is the GMT function per the Rolex/Seiko/Blancpain system, or is it the usual ETA based system which advances the 24hr?

Great info!

F1 and TAG Heuer?????

By: MTF (registered) Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Kong,

I'm a little old and forgetful these days.

I quite like the subtle green on the watch with it's "to-be-different" rationale. Certainly, Heuer has a long association with motor racing. In fact, it was the marketing strategy of old Jack Heuer to partner Scuderia Ferrari and later McLaren Tag teams. They were official F1 timekeepers for a decade and still for Indy 500.

But what has Tag Heuer got to do with F1 timing or the Singapore Gran Prix now? The Mclaren team is associated with Vodafone that implies we should just use our mobile phones for checking the time smile

Tag Heuer do not sponsor any F1 team....that I recall. in fact, the only watch sponsor painted on the cars is Oris...no?

It would be interesting to know how it all fits into Tag Heuer marketing?

Regards,

MTF

You mean...

Could this only be about selling a limited edition using any excuse available, however tenuous... surely not...then again it's nicely aligned to so many other brands with silly LEs (white visor anyone?)

Thanks for the probing question...

The buzzword 'LE' is really not of good taste, well at least to me.  Perhaps limited production quantity is more accurate and appropriate.
That's besides the point.

For this Singapore GP season, many brands have rushed to do something to be associated with the biggest event here.
In the end is commercially driven.

For Tag Heuer, it was mentioned clearly in their  press release (   click here   ), the reasoning behind this launch :

Mr Jean-Christophe Babin, President and CEO of TAG Heuer
continued, ”Singapore is one of the key important markets for TAG Heuer where the sales per capita is one of the highest in the world.... "

Self explanatory, I guessed.

! not ?

Thanks Kong... wasn't really a question actually but good points made there.

Excellent report by the way - great pics as always.

Interesting questions...

Understand that Tag Heuer are having brand ambassadors instead.  One of them is  Kimi Räikkönen, defending Formula 1 World Champion and Scuderia Ferrari driver.

I think the current era, the consumers like to see a face than a brand, or a face from the brand-name especially in the sectors which require skillful individuals.
Just like many of us keen to meet and talk to the watchmaker and artisans behind our watches.  There is a human-face we can associate to and use that to tie-back to the brand.

So is it wiser to sponsor  the machine(the team) or the man.... as to the watch(the brand) or the master-watchmaker (behind the watch)?
Is it more flexible to sponsor individuals then to be locked in to a team?
I don't know Tag Heuer marketing approach.

Unconfirmed info... Tag could be back in F1 for timekeeping in near future.

Thank you, Kong

But you know my problem...

Since you spoke about the V4...I have eyes only for this piece...

I'm waiting with impatience some good news! LOL

As for this Grand Carrera, I'm not convinced, the sapphire case back is IMO not a good idea, and the previous Carreras had soild case back, which was a more logical solution.

My other problem when we speak about Tag Carrera, is that...

More than Blal bla, just a pic, or 2:

The original edition, ( 1964 ), and the Re edition ( 2004 ):

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Don't know who to credit for these maginficient pics... These were both well balanced watches, not too big, nor too small, with a simple, well designed watch, and a solid case back, which was, IMO, more coherent. Best. Nicolas

That is a nice Heuer!

Hmmm....you are not the only person who has raised the point  smile

We shall see when the V4 and other concept watches deliver.

Do you have a preference for chronograph?

Kong

Hi Kong,

By: masterspiece (registered) Saturday, August 9th, 2008

Thanks for the post.

Here are a few of my thoughts, not that it's worth anything...

Aesthetically speaking, would live with but don't particularly care for, the low position of the date. Maybe if it was a little higher, closer to the 12:00 marker. All of the type above and below the second time zone is a little too busy and makes it look bottom heavy. Maybe if it was black SuperLuminova like the Purists' ABR, it could stealthily still be present while not being present?

For the case back, you and Nicolas said it all.

And for some reason, it reminds of a GO. smile

Overall, I like the look of it — the dark bezel and dial, the green (love the green) accents, etc., — a sporty watch that I would wear in casual or semi-formal attire.

As for Tag partnering with F1, I think they vicariously participate through their "ambassadors" and through their F1 racing school in the south of France.

Ciao.
