E. Townsend Watch - I'm on Nantucket
By: db darien (registered) Wednesday, August 6th, 2008
Cheers from Nantucket,
I'm on Nantucket, it's a rainy Wednesday, and under the circumstances a man's mind shifts to......you got it......horology....
Anyway, I just walked out of the shop of one of the better (if not the only) high end watch purveyors on this island. They offer an in-house line called "E. Townsend". The model I'm looking at is a 5 ATM chronograph with a Valjoux 7750 movement - very "Ulysse Nardin-ish" in its design approach. Built to spec in Switzerland for Mr. Townsend, with a 43 mm solid steel case (also offered in rose gold but not at a price level I'd impulse-buy at). Nothing I saw on Google for the watch, but it's a nice piece, aesthetically -- it has one of those flip-open solid steel backs to show the sapphire display back with a very, very nicely finished 7750 movement.
I won't discuss price because it's against protocol here....but let's just say that I'm interested.
Bearing all this in mind, do any of you have any familiarity with this piece or this in-house line? All the models are hand-built and are kept to under 100 or even single digit numbers. This particular AD also carries a whole raft of estate watches (the usual suspects), as well as Franck Muller, Patek, UN and Cuervo y Sobrinos.
So...what do you guys think???? Do I pull the trigger???
Currently own:
G.O. Senator Karree Manual (18K)
Omega PO 45 mm (SS Bracelet - coaxial)
G.O. Senator Navigator Panorama Date (Sapphire display-back presently being retrofitted)

USA name

DB Darien,
This "brand" used to advertise in US watch magazines and also featured in a few articles back in 1999 or 2000.
It is as you described, an own-label watch made with some Swiss components. Even the name evokes memories of a famous historical US name in horology -- George E. Townsend.
There is really no further information to impart.
If you like it and it is at a price point that you can impulse-buy......why not? You're on vacation after all.

i agree with MTF, if you like it, buy it regardless of heritage.

there are some great watches made by small manufacturers from bomb proof parts such as the V7750 that shouldnt be overlooked just because we/you have not heard much about them. one example is the Archers watch company in the US. they/he makes some very classic pieces for pocketmoney prices. all parts from switzerland assembled in US and very nice looking.
if we were all to ignore the small brands there would never be any up and coming watchmakers would there?
go on, you know you want it
Graham
Thanks Graham...

Cheers my friend.

Hi DB Darien,
I agree with MTF and Graham, if the watch says something to you and is priced in your comfort zone, you end up with an unusual piece that will remind you of the time and place of this trip. The watch starts to have its own history and is not reliant on 200+ years of possibly dubious advertising.

Yup it Speaks to me....

It's a neat chronograph, beautifully finished.
Now, I know I can't talk price, so I won't. But think" "Omega".....
Send us some holiday snaps…of the E. Townsend …on location

LOL
Best, and thanks in advance.

If I buy, I'll try
By: db darien (registered) Thursday, August 7th, 2008
If I buy, I'll try to get some pics posted pronto. Can't decide between light or dark dial (leaning to light). Also, I've been down this road before -- watches that are interesting in appearance and have an attractive design but, at end of day, don't 'quite' have the cajones to play with the top tier (e.g., Ball, Bremont, etc.). But I'm going back today and, if I do the deed, will get them to take a few pics and I'll try to get them posted promptly.
Meanwhile, further observations appreciated....
DB, as we've already said. it doesnt matter whether it 'sits in the top tier' or not
By: gmhutton (registered) Thursday, August 7th, 2008
the only important thing is that 1. it is a watch and 2. you like it.
i've got no time for people who only like a watch only because its made by a certain company or one of a few companies. if a watch speaks to you and makes you feel good when you wear it then thats the best indication you need. i've not seen one of these so i cant comment on its looks, but that doesnt matter because i'm not the one wearing it.
there are very few people on this forum who will criticise you because its not 'one of the top tier' and the ones that do dont really belong here and arent worth worrying about. i've only ever come across one or 2 people like that and their posts show them up very quickly, they are also quickly put in their place by at least one of our very committed band of moderators.
you can have a superb 'collection' of watches without ever having owned any of 'the top tier' of watches. its what it means to you and the story of its development that is important and something we will all appreciate, not it financial content.
the reason for the 'no prices' policy is to stop the undesirable snob element who would use the price as a guide to the quality and importance of a watch. i think its perfectly alright to use a price to indicate purchasing a bargain or to show that a company can produce a superb looking piece without you having to donate a kidney to own it.
personally i like to buy pre owned watches as 'getting a bargain' is in my blood and it means that i can buy some pieces that would normally be out of my reach, but i get no criticism from anyone and quite a lot of appreciation.
if you are really concerned about it not being in the top tier then perhaps it is not the watch for you and you should save up to buy one that is, but if your concern is the way others will view it then forget them, they wont be wearing it, you will.
hope that helps with your decision.
enjoy the rest of your trip without regret
Graham
Go with your heart........

and buy it if it sings to you. Top tier or not, the 7750 is a robust and accurate movement and I can't wait to see the pictures of the watch that has captured your attention so much.

Here the pics come!
Wow, thanks for sharing...
So you finally got it?
Best, my friend.
Nicolas
Yup. Got it
By: db darien (registered) Saturday, August 9th, 2008
They had a more expensive inhouse w/movment designed, I'm told, by Roger Duubois, but I'm going with the Valjoux 7750 chrono inasmuch as I have no chrono watch currently in my collection and my next GO will be the Sport Evoloution, but the Panorama Date.
Tell me what you think of its look!!
To me, Kind of a Design Blend of UN and Ball.... [nt]
By: db darien (registered) Saturday, August 9th, 2008
Tend to agree, a blend of UN and Ball,
By: amanico (registered) Saturday, August 9th, 2008
With Hands that you may find on Vintage JLC Pilot Watch...
I'm a bit dubitative about this blend...
Don't see really the thing, but this is just my personal opinion.
THe most important is that it speaks to you, my friend.
Best.

nice choice DB
By: gmhutton (registered) Saturday, August 9th, 2008
the movement is a classic virtually bomb proof piece of engineering and dial is very nice in cream. personally i'm not a big fan of numerals being cut off by subdials so they could have perhaps used markers instead of numerals, but thats just my opinion. i agree with the similarity to Ball and some other companies with US heritage(and as i stated in a previous post, the AP ROO's dont look much different). if your going to buy your first chrono it might as well be a 7750 or one of its derivatives.
its always nice to buy in-house calibres especially from small companies, but the advantage you have over the in-house movement is that anyone can service a V7750. the in-house will need to always go back to manufacturer. as the watch gets older this will make a big difference.
did i read 20ATM on the glass back? if so, thats a good depth for a display back.
overall nice watch DB
regards
Graham
