Finally got a chance to handle the IWC Portofino

By: K T (registered) Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Possibly the most popular piece of the Vintage collection... my thanks to the IWC boutique in Pavilion KL for the pleasure.

Something for the ladies? Possibly the blingiest Portuguese I've ever seen...

And of course it doesn't hurt to look at the Platinum Minute Repeater again...

nice clean lines to the top one, and great looking movement, but

the bling is not for me or my wife for that matter, but its obvious that a lot of care and attention to detail has gone into it.

It's my fav too.

For me, it's the most interesting watch of the Vintage collection.

To be honest, I was disappointed by this collection except by this one.

But I still prefer the original Portofino.

Thanks a lot for sharing.

Well, I was a bit disappointed

As FX, I was a bit disappointed by all these re editions.

I believe that they are more photogenic than nice.

In the flesh, the impression is less more positive, don't really know why, but the proportions don't look that good, on quite all theses watches, excet, maybe, on the Portuguese.

And I don't speak about the Aquatimer or the Pilot watch, too greenish for my taste...

A real deception...

Sad.

Also disappointed...

but for a different reason. I find the contrast between the hands and black dial of the Portofino to be insufficient for easy reading. This isn't a big issue for the "new" vintage Ingenieur or the "new" vintage Pilot's Watch since the hands of those watches have luminova which helps increase the hand/dial contrast.

Best,
Mitch

... and they placed

moonphase and seconds in the "wrong" place :0)

It's a bit like The Godfather III.....

I, too, am another one who is disapointed with the Vintage Collection. It took my a while to really work out why: none of the new Editions excite me nearly as much as the originals they pay hommage too. Yes they are "updated", but they do not inspire the passion I feel about several of the originals. Even the Portofino, the best of the bunch in my opinion, cannot hold a candle to the 5251. It's like the film Godfather III, the first two were so spectacular, that it made perfect sense to make another. And the 20 year wait just heightened the expectations, shame the end result was just so disapointing.

Best,

NickO

An interesting analogy, Nick . . .

. . . as compelling re-makes are as rare as hens teeth. I would agree that G III is not as successful on cinematic grounds as it's predecessors, but the story line loosely follows real events that occurred in our lifetime, which is why I can enjoy the film despite the garish musical scene with Talia Shire singing 'Eh, Cumpari' and the over-the-top finale melding opera with the scene of a crime . . . cordially, Art

Respectfully disagree with the Vintage Series bashers....

I cannot comment on the Portofino (haven't seen it in the metal yet), but I believe IWC did a fine job in re-interpretting these hommages.  These are not limited pieces, but rather regular catalog novelties that have some legs and the ability to evolve as the years go by.  Plus they are priced quite reasonably compared to what the originals are now selling for.  My personal favorite is the Portugueser.  To me the big improvement is the dial.  The originals were printed dials and the new ones with their applied arabics and polished faceted markers and long sweeping dauphine hands are spectacular.  For mine, I changed the strap to give it more of a vintage look.  The movement finishing and casework is among IWC's finest.

Certainly not every watch is going to excite every one of us and I don't deny your right to express yourself here.  I'm just surprised that I'm the only one who has anything nice to say about the neo vintage series.

Cheers,
Larry
