SIHH 2015: Ralph Lauren Automotive Watch Collection

Inspired By His Own Bugatti, Ralph Lauren Creates A Timepiece

When people think celebrity car collections most people think Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld.  Those are two very impressive collections, but I think of Ralph Lauren and his 1938 Bugatti Type 57S that has won awards in every show it’s been entered into (and many Best of Shows out of them).  Ralph uses this car as his inspiration for the Ralph Lauren Automotive Collection of watches.  For example the beautifully glazed wooden steering wheel serves as the inspiration for the amboyna burl wood bezel that adorns some of the dials or bezels of the pieces in the Ralph Lauren Automotive Collection.

Each bezel is drilled from a solid block of Amboyna wood.

Whether in a formal dinner setting or with a black leather motorcycle jacket, the Ralph Lauren Automotive timepiece remains a quiet but loyal accessory.

The Automotive Chronograph

The Ralph Lauren Automotive Skeleton 45MM.  For such a large watch, the watch wears very well on the wrist.

The watch has a genuine blacked out skeleton movement.  This black plating is very difficult to achieve because it adds thickness to certain parts which therefore creates the need for higher machining tolerances.  Panerai switched to a tinted sapphire crystal back after experimenting with black movement coatings.

The Ralph Lauren Automotive Collection is truly an interesting watch that was directly inspired by a Bugatti and designed by a man who owns a classic Bugatti.  Does it speak to today's owners of vintage and modern Bugatti machines?

Excellent taste. The car probably isn't attainable by someone like me (I might not even be able to afford to insure it, much less own it), so I'm regaled to the sidelines on the car. But the watch is something that I can genuinely appreciate and I've actu...

The Diamonds Aren't Necessary At All...

The diamonds aren't necessary at all. In fact, I think the watch would look better without diamonds and with an engraving motif that would be suitable with everything else. The funny thing is that when you see the actual watch, you hardly notice the diamo...

Nice pic of you two. That Bugatti logo is nearly 100 years old. Surprisingly it still looks very modern today.
