Surprise 2 - Exhibit: Time is Light, Better Starts NOW

Nov 14, 2014,19:42 PM

The Part 2 is the report of the other exhibit.

- CITIZEN's basic concept and its history - always about "time" and "future".

Surprise 2: There are so many "World's First".

Starting from the history of the concept of the TIME.

Started 13.8 billion years ago.

Some of the pages of CITIZEN's employee book (every and single employee has this book - more later)

Some of the Prominent CITIZEN watches in the history.

CITIZEN F: CITIZEN's first men's mechanical wrist watch (1931) - Cool!

The schematic of one of the old pocket watches, still kept in CITIZEN's treasure chest (ca. 1920)

... for this one.

CITIZEN's first center second three hands watch (1948)

CITIZEN Calendar: First made-in-Japan triple calendar wrist watch (1952).

Parashock: Japan's first shock resistant watch (1956)

Believe or not, this is the experiment of Parashock to prove its anti-shock mechanism.

CITIZEN Auto: CITIZEN's first automatic wrist watch.  Manual winding is possible, too (1958).

Shine: Japan's first wrist watch for the visually impaired people (1960).

The World's FIRST - Diamond Flake: The then-world's thinnest center second three hands watch (1962)

The World's first - Crystal Seven: Japan's first watch with the Crystal glass, and the then-World's thinnest wrist watch with calendar (1965).

Oops.  Here is my "today's" watch - looks similar, but mine is "Chronomaster".

The World First - EXCEED Gold: The Worl'd First "less than 1mm thickness" quartz movement (1978)

This was the ad back then - peeling the 100 Yen coin and the movement appears.

The World's first - Professional Diver: the world's first divers watch which can endure to 1300mm depth.  Helium gas friendly and made with titanium (1982).

The World's first - Miim of CITIZEN: The world's smallest movement (2002).  Recorded on the Guiness Book in 2007

Each on of them has the tiny movement.

The World's first - Eco-Drive Satellite Wave - AIR: The World's first "Full Metal Case" of such GPS watch.  Metal case had been avoided for GPS watches because of the interference with the GPS signal, but CITIZEN overcame that hurdle.  AND, this receives GPS signal in just 3 seconds (2013).

The World's first - Eco-Drive Satellite Wave F100: The World's thinnest, and fastest reception satellite GPS watch (2014)

Here is a very interesting video made by CITIZEN about this watch.  It takes 5 minutes. but it is well worth watching.

Now, this is a unique exhibit of CITIZEN's own "Employee handbook".  Each of those on the wall is actually a page of the Employee Handbook.

This was most interesting for me:
Saying "WIP (Work In Progress - people still developing himself/herself) Welcome, VIP (Very Important Person who think he or she has arrived at the target of the career - the things of the past) Goodbye".  I was told that it was very controversial to make this book internally - obviously, "VIP" means the senior management people and I can imagine how they would be pissed by this page alone smile

"Better Starts NOW".  Here is also a video which shows it.

Hope you enjoyed the exhibit.  But not yet!  There is Surprise 3.  Please read on!

Ken

Seems that Citizen created a lot of "worlds firsts"

something which I really did not know. Citizen to me is usually associated with the Eco drive movements, but this is an eye opening and very educational report. Thanks for this, and that decoration made with base plates is very original and nice.

Citizen plays a major role on my watch addiction. Until today my son wears my old quartz "Blue Angels", that was an object of desire eons ago. More info about Citizen is always welcome. Cheers, Nilo
