The auto industry is having similar problems

What was once a rite of passage to adulthood in the Western Europe and Americas anyway, is now a nuisance for many.

And the automakers are being dislodged by the electronic toys that we all carry around. One OEM complained "how is it we are losing a $30,000 sale because we don't integrate with a $500 smart phone?"

A couple of items from Automotive News, a trade newspaper:

"It's important for us to acknowledge that the real value for customers with the connected car is outside of our auto industry," Exec VP at Ford Jim Farley said Tuesday during a speech at the Los Angeles Auto Show. "For the car companies, it's pretty clear the mobile digital economy is not in our hands."

"Automakers have historically enjoyed near total control over the content in their vehicles, with suppliers working at the whim of their customers. But in this case, Apple has made the decision; the automakers must live with it. In the future, the disagreement could be weightier. It is not difficult to imagine that automakers may wish to block an app that harvests data, only to discover that Apple or Google is the one calling the shots."
