We have room for improvement! Thank you for the kind words!

Thank you for the very kind words!  We do try!  While WatchProSite definitely goes after a different audience than Hodinkee, and we definitely have room for improvement.  Hodinkee appeals to watch enthusiasts whom are at the beginning of their journey.  However, while that may read as I'm demeaning Hodinkee, I'm really not - I am really in praise of Hodinkee, they do their job well, and they do know their segment well.  Their articles are well written considering their audience (not too technical, but they have something for everybody).  And some will say that Hodinkee sells watches and is thus biased - I would even argue that there's a little bit of a Chinese wall between the editorial side of Hodinkee and the sales side of Hodinkee so the bias is not as strong as some would assume.  The point is that there are multiple segments of the watch market - Hodinkee caters to a much larger crowd than we do, the beginner collector who isn't technical, more brand-name and aesthetically focused, and has only a superficial knowledge about technical and mechanical details.  WatchProSite caters to a smaller part of the segment, but a segment that does spend a large amount of money on generally more expensive timepieces.  Our members are more technically and mechanically inclined.  Have been at collecting watches for a longer time.  And is more qualitative motivated than status motivated.

There is another part of the market that does not find WatchProSite appealing - this segment genuinely like watches because they think they're beautiful and works of art, the typical person in this segment does buy expensive watches frequently.  BUT, they aren't extremely familiar with the technicals/mechanics and the details that makes the product special.  They're typically more status and/or brand-name focused too.  We get a few of these members on the website every year - they try out WPS or they lurk, and we're not able to retain all of them.  Sometimes they feel that they're starting at a disadvantage and they don't feel that they'll ever catch up in knowledge.  Some of these people love to talk about values and would stay if they could talk about financial values in the discussion forum - but we really try to avoid that.  Sometimes individuals in this segment feel that WPS requires a strong commitment - years of investment in reading and responding on the site, plus years of investment in reading up on the details of watches and to educate themselves about the product - that's a lot of patience!  One individual feels that WPS is "his dad's watch website" and prefers to just stay on Instagram himself.  Some don't find that long-term investment appealing and they default back to their preferred medium - Instagram!  Instagram doesn't require any level of commitment and one can come in and leave when they please.  And there are other reasons they don't stay on our website; too many to list.  And there might even be reasons that I'm not aware of - I don't claim to know everything.  One member who posted for a couple years wanted to do exclusive GTG events but he wanted to cherry pick the guest list and WPS is all about fairness and equal access to all and we couldn't really reconcile with that.  There are also other segments too.  The team at WPS really tries to have something for everyone - we all remember when we were early collectors and not that knowledgeable about the subject and we all know we have someone or some group to thank for improving our knowledge.  So we really try to be accommodating to a wide audience.  And we're trying to figure out ways we can lower the barriers to entry!

But overall, I think we are one of the BEST if not THE BEST website on the market that integrates both a news/blog and a discussion forum.  But we have serious competition.  We have professional publications that compete with us like Hodinkee, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and Revolution.  I'd say the team at Revolution writes pretty darn good articles - amongst the best in the print industry.  Their journalists and editors are very knowledgeable.  The questions I hear by watch journalists in the Questions and Answers sections of these press conferences really show that some of these journalists know NOTHING about the topic.  Some journalists don't even know the difference between a hair spring and a mainspring.  Other journalists are knowledgeable - when a magazine says they want a 200 word article - there's simply not enough room to mention anything technical.  Some of the good writers out there are also FORMER WATCHPROSITE ALUMNI!  SJX, Jack Forster at Hodinkee, and a few more are out there!

At the end of the day, we need to know our strengths and our weaknesses.  WatchProSite is the only website that caters to the most knowledgeable group of watch individuals on the internet.  We know it!  And we thank all of you, our readers for it!  The readership on WPS are those who really love watches and have the deepest understanding of the details of the mechanics among virtually all the websites out there - especially ones with a discussion forum.  But we have some weaknesses too, and I think we know enough of them to keep us busy.  All in all, the moderator team here on WPS loves what we do and we feel we enjoy watches so much that we want to help others enjoy horology more too!  Thanks again for your post!

All websites suck!!!

 By: Motty : June 12th, 2023-23:01
I feel like since i came on this forum i dont know how long ago (I’m a lurker👀) there’s no website that gives you the knowledge and info like here. I was reading hodinke and I’m like nothing is new, I’ve seen everything here, the same is with other websit...

Here we are a community of collectors sharing knowledges and experience.

I hope you meant to write "All . . .

. . . other websites suck!" About ten years ago, another occasional member of our community made essentially the same comment with regards to TimeZone. He was upset with TZ because they deleted his thread regarding an issue with Patek Phillipe service and...

It’s a shame, but once Richard Paige, Walt Odets and the rest of the early mob left TZ

 By: j.jota : June 13th, 2023-01:07
it’s only been a platform for press releases … not much substantive discussion. The personal threats against Walt for the Explorer piece I’m sure had a chilling effect.

I didn't know this story. It sounds like it was very well handled here!

 By: BigFatPauli : June 13th, 2023-01:08
And bravo for that! Timezone's moderation is a very special... Um... Thing. I think a lot of people have had bad experiences there (myself included).

Does TZ still exist?

 By: vitalsigns : June 13th, 2023-04:19
Last time I visited, years ago, it was a damn cemetery. A dead forum if there ever was one.

I don’t post a lot because I’m terrible at taking pictures, and love to read and see different opinions

 By: Motty : June 13th, 2023-12:33
I think most of these other websites became a tool to sell and therefore they just look at their content as a way to sell or advertise, if it doesn’t fit the narrative then they will delete or remove you Here even sometimes posts gets removed for violatin...

I also fell victim to TZ’s overzealous moderation.

 By: RabidManatee : June 13th, 2023-14:39
Years ago, I posted an honest question regarding a Mark XV I owned at the time. I guess the brand forum moderator objected to something I was asking or perhaps implying and removed my post.

I have no knowledge of TimeZone's business practices, but can say that our sponsored forums . . .

 By: Dr No : June 13th, 2023-15:17
. . . have complete editorial independence. The only thread/post deletions here are for violations of embargoes and unbecoming behavior. We expect everyone to act and react on this site as they would as a guest at a cocktail party. If you wouldn't say it ...

I can assure you that my question wasn’t meant to be provocative.

 By: RabidManatee : June 13th, 2023-15:48
As I recall, I had a question as to whether an AR coated crystal could have been a replacement. This was troubling as I thought the watch was new. To this day I don’t know as I never got an answer. To your point, I would NEVER expect that sort of reaction...

Oh, I fully understood your intent, RM . . .

 By: Dr No : June 13th, 2023-15:58
. . . my comment was made to elaborate, not to criticize. Apologies if what I wrote came across as offensive. Cordially, Art

Not offensive at all, Sir.

 By: RabidManatee : June 13th, 2023-16:01
I just thought I’d clarify my experience, which sounds not entirely unique. Thanks Dr. No! RM

No no all good

You’re lucky only your post was removed….

 By: NickO : June 13th, 2023-23:12
When Michael Sandler stepped down as head moderator, I congratulated him and suggested it might be the perfect opportunity for a more open and collaborative moderating style on Timezone. I guess my suggestion was not well received as Jessica, the incoming...

Yikes! So much for fostering an open discourse.

It’s funny, none of us have lost sleep over having been treated questionably, yet we haven’t forgotten, either. Perhaps there’s a lesson to be learned here for Internet forum tyrants in the making.

Thank you for the kind words!

 By: patrick_y : June 13th, 2023-09:32
For a seasoned collector who is genuinely knowledgeable (like yourself) about watches and mechanics , like many on WatchProSite, yes, they'll find Hodinkee's articles to be fairly devoid of the special details that give off that special spark. You are obv...

Oh, but the comments 😔.

 By: RabidManatee : June 14th, 2023-00:19
To be clear, some of the the comments on Hodinkee… Oy.

This is also literally my only presence, aside from LI and i like it! More time.to spend here.

 By: @lberti : June 13th, 2023-08:45
Hodinkee was nice at the beginning, eg with the presence of Jack Forster. After that, not my place

Like SJX, Jack F also got his start here . . .

 By: Dr No : June 13th, 2023-18:43
. . . and continued posting on at least one Purists sub-forum even after moving to Revo. He's a first-rate writer, to be sure. Art

one thing can be said about all social media sites: content is being recycled anyways, incl. LinkedIn!!!, so why have multiple profiles at all?

 By: @lberti : June 13th, 2023-13:45
So lets better keep it like this and enjoy the silence Yeah, Jack is a cool dude!

+1! ;-))

Pretty much the same regarding internet presence (or lack thereof).

 By: RabidManatee : June 13th, 2023-15:57
I used to occasionally post on TZ, but it’s been several years since my last foray there. I also had (have?) a Hodinkee account, but again, inactive. Never on FB, IG, etc., although I do keep tabs on a few industry-related Twitter feeds (no log in). I’m d...

Agreed! There are some good ones out there!

 By: patrick_y : June 13th, 2023-09:34
Many are WatchProSite alumni too! But yes, the ones with the widest audiences are generally pandering to the masses - and the masses are NOT the super knowledgeable and technically inclined individuals like the audience on WPS.

True, on all counts.

More puff pieces to come... Readers don't want to discover something new but read facts they already know...

 By: patrick_y : June 15th, 2023-08:03
A lot of Hodinkee's readers are very eager to gobble up the marketing rhetoric in puff pieces. One former Hodinkee Editor was even still quite adamantly vocal that "a Rolex takes a year to make" - she was definitely outdated if that was ever true. Hodinke...

Readers like you hold WPS to a high standard!

 By: patrick_y : June 13th, 2023-09:37
Whenever I write an article, I have to ask myself, will it measure up to the high standards of this crowd? Do I have something for every type of reader? And do I know my audience well? It's not easy. And getting technical information from the brands isn't...

Agreed on SJX.

Oh! I didn't know we had a fountain pen forum.

Either I must have forgotten or it was before my time.

SJX is WatchProSite Alumni!

He got his start here! And he is very knowledgeable about watches and many other topics! ESPECIALLY fountain pens!
