...the production overcapacity in the auto industry which meant their facilities in Turin were underutilised,  combined with the tendency of manufacturers bringing design in-house.

But they created legends and I'm proud and grateful to have owned, driven and admired their work.
Sad news but the golden era was over decades ago...it could be worse. At least the Bertone badge isn't a trim level on a Ford a la Ghia.

The X1/9 was one of my favorite Bertones, my friend was proud of his 1987 model, as teenagers we had great moments with this little two-seater. A revival of a modern X1/9 would have been nice ... but then, it would probably be something unfamiliar looking...  

It's a crying shame!

Among 4 great carrozzeristas (Ghia,Giugiaro, Pinifarina & Bertone) I consider Bertone No1 Some may say I'm biased as Alfista but designing Holy Lambo Trinity (Miura; Countach & Diablo) was all that they could have done and it'll be enough in my bo...

but I would't be surprised to see in next couple pf years FIAT 500 Bertone version as top level of trim You are absolutely right golden age ended with Alfa 159 ;) :) Best D

...you're probably right. But they (they = FIAT) have already sullied the Abarth name with that type of effort... But then, even 'M' and 'AMG' badges are becoming trim levels... From hand built engines....to a boot spoiler, a set of alloys...but the same ...
