Eberhard golden age

Feb 01, 2014,10:26 AM

The 60s Eberhard production cited by Tony and others (Scafograf, Scientigraf without to forget the Contograf) are appealing and highly collectible IMO.

We could also speak about the Contodat, first chronograph with date, the gold case execution with its terrific lugs is a joy to look at, I expect Matt to chime in soon ;-)

To my eyes, the Eberhard golden age goes from the mid 30s to the 40s.

Eberhard has been very successful in Italy being very involved in the Italian Motorsport in the 30s and subsequently became the official watchmaker of the Italian Navy.

Some of the chronographs of that era

2 key features, the obvious step back bezel and the huge (at the time) 39 mm diameter case
we can also find many attractive looking dials

in 1938 Eberhard introduced a model featuring a 12 hours counter

In 1939 their first split second chronograph

many others will follow

On the movement side, Eberhard mainly used Valjoux ebauches with anglages finishing

In 1940 they unveiled their Caliber 1600 which offered a slide located at 4 allowing to interrupt the timing as often as desired and start it up again, it was therefore vastly suitable for every kind of addition timekeeping

Eberhard was definitely a key player in the chronographs world, it's easy to understand why Italian collectors - beyond the particular historical links - pay so much attention to these magnificent timepieces.

Best,

Laurent

Eberhard Co - A chronograph that I seldom see ..

Team, Yesterday with our flea market incursion canceled (the protesters against the Soccer World Cup - my feeling is that this go to escalate as soon we close to the World Cup opening) we went to a coffee shop and a friend was wearing this one. I searched...

Bonus point ...

It's "by Vlad appointment", meaning no date. Cheers, Nilo

Eberhard made some amazing manufacture chronographs

 By: Goldenlutin : January 27th, 2014-14:46
The one you show is not that old and probably has a Lemania inside. Older ones had manufacture movements, like the one below. It was the first chronograph (calibre 310-82) with digital date (single disc). A lot of people think that the Landeron 189 was th...

To die for. Gorgeous. Eberhard is a very interesting brand and it deserves more "airtime", just as Nicolas stated. Congratulations, Nilo

Great pieces...

A rare sight indeed!

Thanks for sharing Nilo I seldom read about Eberhard or see them here. This gold chrono looks great! I wish brands still make chronos like this one, without Dates, with such a classic layout and such beautiful cases. cheers robin

I agree ...

Robin, Before posting here I did a web research about Eberhard and it seems that there are quite a few information about the brand, even about who owns it. I'm assuming that is an independent, owned by Palmiro Mont (Curious note - there is a family on my ...

Eberhard has a long history of manufacturing fine chronographs. They also, in my view, hold a fairly important place in the development of early (i.e. '50s and early '60s) dive watches. Not so much because of great technical breakthroughs, but very good m...

Love the strap that you have on yours, as well. Cheers, Tony C.

Scafograf, Scientigraf, those were alternatives to the Seamaster and the Railmaster.

A beauty Tony and thoughts on Eberhard

 By: RDL : January 28th, 2014-04:58
Tony, your Scafograf is a beauty. A great watch. I also like the Scientifigraf. For me, without being able to exactly pinpoint why, Eberhard is a bit like Longines and Movado (all 3 of them BTW loved by Italian collectors specifically - and we know they a...

Thank you, and I agree...

Longines and Movado have long been two of my favorites as well. Your points, and our similar paths underscore one of the sublime joys of vintage watch collecting: the deeper one digs, the more interesting and enjoyable the process becomes! Cheers, Tony C....

Eberhard & Co.

Eberhard has made many beautiful watches over the years, I have the Huit Jours (8 days) with a Peseux 7001 movement highly modified with twin barrels and power-reserve indicator (Eberhard cal. 896-8J). Eberhard & Co is an independent watch company own...

Oldflyer

I found some information about your friends Eberhard. The model is called Oldflyer Vitré and is from the Avio Collection. It was made in the late 1990's. The movement is a Valjoux 7733. LdB ...

Livius, Thank you very much. I go to try to get a picture of the case back of my friend's watch in order to compare with the one that you found. Cheers, Nilo

Ouch! ...

 By: Marcus Hanke : January 31st, 2014-03:37
In my opinion, this rough, "bare-bones" movement is an insult to the wonderfully elegant appearance of the whole watch. I think that a solid caseback would have been a much better choice. Marcus

nice Chrono Nilo, but i think the older Eberhards were better

... in its expensive development of the "Chrono4", the 7750's re-arrangement of subcounters in a line. From then on, this "design" has been beaten to death and beyond. My wife's Chronomaster "Frecce Tricolori" is still her favourite watch, in spite of the...

As a side note, the Chrono4 is based on the ETA2896, not 7750

 By: Goldenlutin : January 31st, 2014-15:55
The Chrono4 module sits on an ETA 2892 not on the 7750. The rest is a matter of taste. At least they achieved a unique look with the Chrono4, which is better then nothing. Best, Goldenlutin

Thank you for this information ...

 By: Marcus Hanke : February 1st, 2014-15:39
... I did not know about the 2892 base. I never doubted the mechanical effort necessary to achieve this new layout, nor the value of this design per se. However, Eberhard appeared to focus on the Chrono 4 almost exclusively for a long time. For me, Eberha...
