To me the date at six kills the beauty of the sub-second dial.
If it would have been a central second dial, my objection would not have been as strong, still think it would even better without.
Or at three, inside the minute track.
As for big date -
Big date is often the main attraction, not the side show. I.e. the design of a dial often starts from the big date and then fans out.
If a big date window would go through a sub-second as small as the one on the Longines, I would still think it would kill the sub-second dial.
Here is an example of design that IMO works - the Reverso GMT.
The date go through the hour numerals, yes, but that is a part of the design - same for the day/night indicator and the sub-second.
As for the Longines, my feeling is that the date is something added after the design just to have a date.
