Hi Mike
Thanks for your reply and also your points to me, which are valid of course. Buy what we like and what we can afford.
I have come close to buying a MB Villeret actually - once when I compared the MB Villeret Vintage Pulsographe with a Patek Annual Calendar end of 2012 (not apples to apples I know but similar price points). I went for the Patek as I felt I needed a Patek in my collection and I also wanted a calendar complication (I went for the brand i know!). But the Pulsographe fuelled my desire to get a traditional/highly finished horizontal coupling chrono.....
So more recently, I started looking at high end chronos. It was again MB Villeret but this time, I pitted it against Langes (1815 chrono and Datograph).
I preferred the MB Villeret (Pulsographe and Email Chronographe jubliee edition were my contenders) to the 1815 chrono but fell in love with the Original Dato (which I preferred over the Dato up/down due mainly to size/wrist fit). I got the Dato in the end.
Now, i STILL LIKE MB Villerets! It's not over yet but I probably won't want a chrono now since I got a Dato (I tend not to repeat my watch types/complications in my collection). Now I am looking at the Jubliee edition Zero Retour (41mm) and I like it alot.
My concerns are 2 as stated a few times and I am still trying to overcome them:
1. Branding - this is a lesser and lesser concern over time as I see MB doing better and better in watches and also alot more serious
2. Price - this is a bigger concern. I am really worried, esp with all these posts here, that if I get an MB Villeret now (many models are launched a few years ago now but still "stuck" in Boutiques and ADs to be honest) at this high price, what if MB read the posts here (and other forums) and decided to decrease the price? Or increase Production? Or lower finishing?!
Then what will happen to the current piece I buy? A signal that I got an MB Villeret of an era where the market felt it was overpriced and hence MB had to adjust (price, finishing, production numbers)?
A double-edged sword and maybe a vicious cycle here.... I have no ideas on how to resolve this to be honest. I guess if I get an MB Villeret soon, I would need a very Pure attitude to my purchase.
Cheers, robin
