I keep thinking about this...

I'm a product designer so contemplating the thing that comes after the next new thing really is my job. smile

If Panerai were to do a 100% new case shape, what would its character be?

In one direction, I could see them focusing on the ultimate underwater tool watch. Their watch history is born in the sea with the MM and Egyptian navies, and they created the most advanced underwater watches of their time. But using today's material and manufacturing technology, is it possible establish a new iconic case shape that historically would not have been feasible? I'd see this watch as uncompromising in it's utility and use of materials to achieve its goal; Be the Best Tool in the water.

Another direction could be for OP to further highlight its standing as a manufacture and do a case that is somehow directly tied to, and showing off their own in house movements. This design would less tool like and lean more towards the sophisticated and refined end of horologie, not necessarily ultra complicated, but engineered and finished with 21st century ability. That is, how can technology further enhance the movements and cases OP creates. I'm thinking out loud, but what if OP released a unibody type construction watch, a la Mac Book Pro, in which the case itself was an integral part of the movement. There would be plenty of issues to resolve, shock absorption comes to mind first, but it could be interesting.

This kind of high level "Upstream" question is what a designer dreams about. What do you guys think?

But AKAIK they both housed the exact same movement, that is a Rolex on a Cortebert base, the calibre 618. There are probably slight differences as well with their case's side profiles as can be seen in some Panerai reference books. So in terms of movement...

Mine would be.....

1. a 47mm of the Egiziano , it would be the perfect Sub 2. a re-edition of PAM 004 , with the new style numeral (like on the boutique editions) and faux patina , probably with the new P3000 in-house movement 3. a 47mm Luminor Base (Fiddy without second ha...

...Panerai maybe doing an SE 6154 remake without the crown gaurd. Not quite a modern Lum, not quite a modern Rad, but still 100% Panerai roots. It would be following in the footsteps of the re-released Mare. I'd love to see some more 47mm Lum options.

When I mean new case, I mean brand new case

Not a case from the past, but a totally new case that we've never ever seen before. That's what I would prefer to see rather than a re-issued case from a vintage model. I want something radical and new Cheers, Anthony

Several new possible 2011 pieces come to mind.....

 By: jchubb59 : January 10th, 2011-00:06
Hello, It is always exciting to play the Pre-SIHH guessing game. It's possible for some innovations off of previous ideas, however I always try and look at what Panerai HAS NOT offered as of yet. What would be nice and what they have not ever offered........

Ooops forgot two more......
