Additional Information about The Seiko Discus

Jan 12, 2008,19:15 PM

Was able to have the japanese translated but, unfortunately, it is much harder to go from Japanese to English. There are some areas that, if translated verbatim, would make no sense so we tried to capture the "essence" of their message as the Japanese writers were trying to be very poetic. Translated the information from two sites, the Seiko site and another site.

i did not repeat some of the technical information that was previously posted however, the crystal is not a sapphire crystal but Seiko's own Hardlex crystal.

if you understand Japanese (and or are a Nihonjin) and find some errors, feel free to contribute. Please understand also that this is NOT an "official" translation from Seiko itself, its partners or any of its agencies.

Finally, there is a technical area that we could not translate but tried as best as possible. I do not understand what "Gang- gi" is but I know it has something to do with the Jeweled fork and balance lever and how it affects/interacts with the Escape wheel. Gang-gi is not Japanese so I was thinking that Gang-gii could mean Gang Key(?). Could that be another description of jeweled fork?

Thank you and I hope you enjoy.

BTW, I've got one on the way and should have it in-hand on the 24th.

This first part is from the Seiko leaflet pdf:
-----------------

Hidden (subtle?) Mechanical Watch

It is not like a (typical) watch, time is displayed by discs not hands.
The discs that slowly move ever so flawlessly remind you of the rotation of the earth or the orbit of the planets.
In this small space called a wrist watch, it is as though the watch has wrapped itself around a microcosm.

Mechanical
Materials commonly used:
Stainless steel casing (hardened coating is partly used for SCBS005; SCBS007 uses hardened coating)
Back closer (*the back cover ): Stainless steel and glass
Curved glass
Waterproof reinforcement for daily use (10 atmospheric pressure)
Magnetized (Yes, that's what it said, Magnetizedsmile)watch
Automatic self-winding movement (with manual winding capability) / approximately 50 hours of continued movements when wound up all the way (“50 hour power reserve” ) / 23 jewels / capability to stop the second hand / Accuracy: between +25 seconds from -15 seconds per month

This second part is from Seiko's retailer site and is more poetic
-----------------
The Seiko Discus Burger
The concept is earth and harmony. Taking the Seiko technology one step further, Seiko has designed a watch for future generations. Seiko proudly presents this poetic, ecologically designed watch. This special watch is only available in selected stores in Japan. It’s a manual/mechanical wind disk watch. The manual wound movement 6R15 is used to ensure quality, longevity, and stability. Thereby appealing to the masses from the beginning watch fan to the experienced collector, meeting their every expectation. This very unique design represents a connection between self, earth and the universe.

Moving Design Collection, a new series in the Seiko line of fine watches, represents a commitment to ecology that is expressed in a poetic design.
1. The watch not only tells the time but is a constant reminder of mankind’s symbiosis with the earth and the universe. That is the goal of the design. It also reflects Seiko’s sincere commitment to ecology. They were resolute in presenting a pure, clear cut, beautiful and simple, but innovative design. They not only have the mechanical movement model, which is a solid approach of their commitment to save the environment, they also have solar models that do not require batteries. This is just the first in the series of new and exciting things to come.

2. The dial design reflects how the universe operates. Beneath the clear opening of the crystal, three fine grain aluminum disks run harmoniously like the universe. Everyone’s eyes are glued to the expression method that reminds you of the orbiting paths of the planets.
a. The dark crystal represents the universe.
b. The clear area of the crystal represents the earth floating in the universe.
c. The green triangles represents yourself on earth.
Although the design of the watch is impactful, the deeper meaning is that we can all emapathize with the concept. Wrapped within this small watch is the universe and you are reminded of this when you least expect it. You will find yourself being reminded of things outside of your ordinary routine in the universe captured in this watch. In a troubled world, this design helps you understand not only with your mind but with your spirit that man coexists with the universe.

3. 6R15 Movement Specs
The newly developed mechanical 6R15 Movement, focuses on quality, longevity and stability. The master technicians do the processing and adjustments down to the smallest micron that is unattainable in assembly line fashion, with remarkable achievements. 21,600 VPH,

The 6R15’s movement is comparable to the dreamlike precision movement of the 4S15 (+2.5 -15 seconds), 50 hours fully wound, compared to the 4S15’s fully wound 38 hour. The basic performance of this stable and reliable movement is expanded to it’s fullest and provides high precision not only to mechanical type watch fans but also for first time watch buyer.

The Top 3 Characteristics of this superior durability
•Diaflex
The mainspring is made of spron, originally developed by Seiko, which is very durable, rust free, and difficult to cut.

•Diashock
An originally developed structure that disperses shocks and vibrations which protects the temp, the heart of the watch.

•Diafix
A shock absorbing structure that protects the escape wheel (this is the part that it seems like it is talking about the jeweled fork and balance lever. If anyone is able to disclose how the Diafix operates, that would be great)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When fully wound it will last 50 hours. If you forget to wind it and go on vacation, when you start to wind it again it will start immediately.

You will enjoy the feel of winding it as it makes a fun “gzzzzzz” sound.

Because it is a mechanical watch, you will want to set it precisely. You are able to do so by stopping the second hand. You can enjoy the fluidity of the second hand because it has a high torque. With proper maintenance, it’s precision will last forever.

Semi-transparent back structure makes you happy just by watching it. You will enjoy looking at the TEMP from the see-through back.

Special Burger Form
Because of its special burger form, anyone is able to wear it. When viewed from the side, you can see that the top and bottom are symmetrical and looks like a burger. It is smooth and has no bumps. It wraps around the precise movement of the watch and and you can visually enjoy it.

The glass (Hardlex Crystal) on the top and bottom has smooth curves and a unifying round shape which is both modern and humorous. You can use it in rain and if you work with water because it is water resistant to to 10 atmospheric pressures (approx 100 meters).

It is typical for mechanical watches to be affected by magnetic fields but this model exceeds the highest level JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) Standards.however, the watch should be kept at least 5 cm from magnetic objects such as cell phone speakers and hand bags.

The band fits well for everyone
On the thicker side, the leather band is 1.43 cm thick but surprisingly, it has a great fit. It connects without leaving any room and because of its 3D structure, it curves down. It promises a comfortable fit as both the body and the band is curved. therefore, the band and will fit thin to muscular wrists.

3 Way Folding Buckle
The buckle consistently remains in a circular shape, allowing ease of use in putting on and taking it off and prevents the watch from accidently falling off. It also minimizes wear and tear on the leather strap. Its safety feature is a one push lock and release that makes a “kachink” sound. That sound let’s the wearer know that it is either locked or released. The ease of the buckle will not ruin your nails.

Thanks, again

Bob

fans, which there seem to be quite a few. Thanks for all the work. There is one contradiction in the material that is very important, the magnetic issue. The Japan Industry Standard usually refers to how something "resists" a threat to the product. So I a...

Yes, the contradiction...

is what makes the Japanese language so funny. It really is anti-magnetic, though. Yes, I can see how if the watch were "magnetic", it would cause problems not only with other watches but other sensitive electronic equipment and possibly medical equipment....

Thanks Bob, after going to Japan for 20+ years>>>

I know the issue. My agents in Japan are rounding up a few, at that price makes a nice gift too. Thanks again for all the work. Tim

My pleasure, Tim.
