New England region PuristS get together report

Boston is a city probably best known for its professional sport teams: the Celtics, Red Sox, Bruins, and the Patriots.  Gastronomically it is famous for baked beans hence Boston's nickname "Bean town" ! Historically Boston was the center of the watchmaking in the United States.  Home to Waltham and Boston Watch Co.  these two companies industrialized the entire watch manufacturing process.  They became the first "vertically integrated" companies in ...

Big, White, Beauty : Bell & Ross BR03-92 A Woman’s Perspective

Big, White, Beauty : Bell & Ross BR03-92 A Woman’s Perspective   While perusing various showcases and shops on a recent getaway to the “city of lights”, something rather white and bright caught my eye.  Immediately, I recognized the signature round dial in a square case from the Bell & Ross collection of watches.  However, this was one I hadn’t yet seen before.  Intrigued, I summoned the sales associate for a closer look. It was a BR03-92 with a white ceramic ...

Form follows function: The Porsche Design by IWC Ocean 2000

In 1978, amidst the quartz crisis, IWC and Porsche Design began a collaboration that would last twenty years and spawn many ground breaking timepieces. One of them was the world’s first wristwatch with titanium case and bracelet, the ref. 3700 automatic chronograph. The collaboration was a commercial success and helped saved IWC amidst the quartz crisis; according to Michael Friedberg, moderator of the official IWC forum, “Anecdotal reports claim that, back in the early 1980s, [the ref. 3700] an...

What is incredible about being BULGARI...

The tactile quality of any jewelry or sculpture is absolutely essential to both fully enjoying it and fully understanding it. Hence..Bulgari is a MUST touch, more than a MUST SEE. You must have had this feeling before..the watch looks great but feels..???. The Bulgari's do not have any question marks left for any prospective admirer...Rolex ...

exploring something different ... chain and fusee and a quarter repeater

it's not always about the getting the latest and greatest is it? so much hype and marketing baloney ramming all kinds of timekeeping monstrosities into our consciousness... of course there are nice watches too but have you seen what they are going for these days? prices have been on the up and up for the past couple of years with no signs of stopping... fear not though, there are actually a lot of interesting watches out there with cool movements that won't cost you an arm and a leg... no they weren't on...

Spotted: PuristS, An Investment Bank and TimeWerke

I've often wondered what those high-flying investment bankers and analysts do with their 'disposable income'.  Their stratospheric individual nett worth is the stuff of legend. Those apocryphal tales of boozy lunches in the City with half-cases of Ch. Pomerol 1982 and Ch.Margaux 1983 or about 2 guys outbidding each other for a FP Journe Vagabondage and breaking the world record seem too fantastic to be true. One day, I found myself the only non-bank employee at a little get-together su...

Cartier SIHH 2008

Cartier debuted a lot of different models at this year's 2008 SIHH, and I consider this year's collection much more impressive than last year's because many more pieces caught my attention.  It would take forever to list each and every single new model, so I'll just talk about the pieces I found interesting.  I was going to report more than the 4 watches below but was told not to share some of the new models on the web (for some strange reason?) so either way, here are the models I'm cu...

Basel 2008: Concord ignites the second stage

Basel 2008: Concord ignites the second stagewitnessed by Marcus Hanke A year ago, the announcement of Concord’s complete renovation already stirred some attention, and some very cleverly made advertising, hiding more than revealing, further added to the general curiosity. As a consequence, the large Concord booth at last year’s Basel fair was a rather busy place, when I visited it. To read my account on Concord’s debut in 2007, please click here . However, nothing prepared me ...

Montblanc SIHH 2008

Montblanc debuted a very interesting piece at this year's SIHH; and after my appointment, I felt pleasantly impressed and "horologically satisfied."  After digesting all the new models debuted at SIHH for a few days, I came to the conclusion that the Montblanc Star Nicolas Rieussec Monopusher Chronograph was my most favorite watch during the entire show.   43mm Montblanc Star Nicolas Rieussec Monopusher Chronograph in white gold   Not only is the Nicolas Rieussec Monopusher very pleas...

IWC SIHH 2008

. . . starting with the heavyweight class, the Grande Complication in rose gold, which combines the complications of a minute repeater, perpetual calendar, and chronograph in a single movement . . . . . . and very attractive, I might add, in what appears to be a slate grey dial with perhaps a hint of blue. I'll bet Anthony liked this one ;-) . . . To read the rest of Art Dakessian's report on the IWC SIHH 2008 collection:  click here ...

Van Cleef & Arpels SIHH 2008

The theme for the Van Cleef & Arpels watches for SIHH 2008 was "Jewellery timepieces and poetic complications" and a couple pieces were made for men.  I'm not sure if I like the term "poetic complications" because it is a little feminine sounding   Either way, let's go straight to the watches because I'm pretty sure many of the hard core PuristS are probably scratching their heads asking themselves why are we covering Van Cleef & Arpels this year since their watches are typically jewellery&n...

Roger Dubuis 2008 SIHH

This year Roger Dubuis expanded its Excalibur line and debuted a new watch case named KingSquare.  The Excalibur line made its debut in 2005 and is my favorite line from Dubuis, and I'm delighted to see they offer many more designs and complications in this beautiful case. One of the new ladies' models in the Excalibur line is an emeralds version w/ a green croc strap.  Available in different dials, jewels, and case metals, this 39mm Exaclibur Emeralds features a tourbillon at 6 o'clock. Introducing the Korona from Stepan Sarpaneva

How about a little science lesson as we head into the weekend? Have you ever noticed the beautiful yet surreal, concentric coloured rings around the Sun or the Moon? In meteorology, that effect is referred to as a corona.  It is an atmospheric effect caused by the diffraction of light from the Sun, Moon or any other celestial object by small individual water droplets or tiny ice crystals of a cloud.  In astronomy, a corona is actually a type of super heated gas atmosphere of the Sun ...
