Nardin marine chronometer (clock)

thx Marcus. You must know allot of ppl at U.N.  I got a very nice email from them about my chronometer.  They said that I would send it to the service center here.  Then they would forward it back to Switzerland to be serviced.

Sorry that I haven't gotten back to you.  I am also a photographer.  So if I post pictures, I'm kind of picky about which ones that I will post.  I just got the clock back from the auction house.  The tricky part in photographing them is exposing the movement without in any way damaging the dial face or hands.  Most ppl seem to set the movement face down on the brass tub.  But I'm not confident enough in handling it to do that without scratching it.  So give me some time to learn more about them. smile

Again thx for your posts. I am loving it even though i can't run it because the movement needs to be cleaned and oiled.

I just bought a Nardin Marine Chronometer (clock), circa 1910. it is a restoration project that will probably take a year to be completed. U.N. has posted a section on their website about their past as makers of Marine Chronometers. They mention that they...

In a USA AD showroom about ten years ago that he had done by UN in Switzerland. It looked great with all the wood refinished as well. I have one from 1945 that is in need of servicing as well. I've thought about restoration also, but I'm concerned about r...

removing a sticker from a brass Nardin chronometer bowl

Glad to know a fellow Nardin chronometer fan is here too. :) . When I got my chronometer back from the auction house, I noticed that they affixed an auction sticker on the chronometer's bowl. I warned them that if they do that to a later model chronometer...

Mine will run with a "nudge" but largely sits as a decorative item in my office. I don't believe it has been serviced since it was new in the '40s. I have some paperwork including a timing certificate that leads me to believe it wasn't used at sea, or if ...

I'm very impressed by how well preserved your chronometer is. Ray Bates, the past president of the BHI, probably will restore mine. He told me that he usually has a 9 month lead time which is typical since so few people work on them, now. I have thought a...

USN instructions

 By: sinohog : June 8th, 2013-07:50
I think that the USN had the best instruction and training program for ship's chronometers because they tend to rotate staff around allot and there is this sensitive instrument that needs to be carefully maintained. Those instructions are very helpful. Ha...

... this would have been noted on the accompanying papers, I assume. At least this was the case on a chronometer I had seen many years ago. The date of testing suggests that it was part of an order placed during the war, but being fulfiled only after the ...

Thanks Marcus. Happy to contribute. Yes, this is my theory as well given the late testing as new date in late 1945. On 9 Jun, 2013, at 2:58,

yeah, it is more about handling the chronometer correctly so that I won't damage it in anyway. Also, to do it justice, I will need a macro lens. I don't have one anymore. But I need one if I'm going to do it right. doesn't have to be an expensive one. A f...

Love watching your chronometer run. But I worry about it running "dry", i.e. without oil. I think that you would enjoy reading a book that I recently bought: THE MARINER'S CHRONOMETER: STRUCTURE, FUNCTION, MAINTENANCE AND HISTORY by W.J Morris. He goes in...
