Hi, welcome, and great question.

Since I am writing a series on collections, perhap I can address it.

I think it's fair to say that collectors look down on THEIR OWN early efforts as naive, uninformed, etc, as much as they might feel the same about other "starter collections".

I can't justify this except to say that I still have about a dozen of my early choices so I'm not doing so badly. But perhaps we wince or groan as we see a young collection ( not necessarily a young collector) that reminds us of moves that we made -- which we later undid; or watches which didn't last, or cost a lot to service; or the company turned out to be run by boneheads.

People with good manners allow others to express themselves, and respectfully offer advice when asked. I trust you will find this kind of reception here.  We have people with a handful of watches, and some with hundreds; collections worth a few thousand dollars and some worth a few millions.

Collecting is indeed buying watches we like but the cruelty of collecting is that our likes constantly evolve - and faster than our incomes do.

Enjoy your time here, read and listen and ask questions, and we'll do what we can to make your visits profitable.

Cheers,

Cazalea

I recently in the last 8 months started a watch collection. I'm learning much about movements and brands from reading everything I can get my hands on. I however, have a young family, and am not looking to spend thousands on a new watch. I have several wa...

Welcome here Curtis. You are 100% correct: "The Sickness" (it comes in different shades to 'collectors', investors, acquirers, flippers, enthusiasts or 'nuts') is first and foremost definitely about acquiring - and hopefully wearing - what you like. Speak...

Thank you

I'm looking at an Oris as my next purchase. I need tough watches for my career. I have also started to look at Shinola, and Lum Tec. There is a bronze combat B Lum Tec I really like.

And welcome to this forum, BTW. I know what you mean, and I've experienced some of that personally on some other forums before I found this one some years back. It is a very welcoming place, and you can be a one watch person and still feel tremendously we...

Collecting watches is a journey

You start one place and end up in another place. Along the way you meet different people with different tastes. Some you like some you like less. You get the chance to taste and explore along the the way. This forum is a great place to share the journey w...

Hey there!

As a young and fairly new collector myself, I feel I can relate! Just like finding the watches you "click" with, you'll find fellow watch enthusiasts who love how much you love the watch or the excitement in your eyes more than the brand stamped on the ph...
