If it wouldn't help, they wouldn't be paid. Simple.
Strong example: if some certain actor from some certain film based upon a novelle about some certain secret agent didn't wear a NATO strap on his Rolex nobody (maybe apart from soldiers) would wear a Submarine with a NATO strap. You could probably even argue that the vintage Rolex Submarine would not be coveted if that series of film wouldn't have existed. That is how strong the influence of celeberties or movies can be in the world of advertising. And that's a well known fact. So a rhetorical question indeed.
Collectors
What or how collectors (purists?) feel about it is another question (and quit irrelevant to the big brands I guess). The mainstream advertising isn't addressed to (us) collectors. The collectors will know anyway whats up for sale. Celebs or no celebs.
