. Seriously, pplater, you seldom write, but once you write I can hardly understand what you were trying to convey. And thank you Ares for making me the most notorious weirdo of the Purists . It's so dense and full of passion, I can barely able to digest it.
1. what is the purpose of a watch nowadays? To tell time? I survived 30 years of my life without a watch adorning my beautiful slender wrist. I could glance at my phone, at other people watches, and used the baareness of my wrist to ask pretty girl what the times were
2. If a watch must have a purpose, what is the purpose of Mona Lisa or any of Rembrandt's paintings? For me, they exist to beautify my life, to keep me drooling, to satisfy my curiosity. But it doesn't have to have the raison .... (what were the words again?). A watch just have to satisfy the buyers.
3. I agree that nowadays too many people want to be watchmakers or trying to create new watch brands (your term is 'emperor's new clothes'). But where's the line? Does Gruebel Forsey market BS watches? How about Dufour Duality? Is Seiko Izul really another BS? Is Roger Smith not marketing a nostalgia (before anyone slap me silly with this statement, I bought that nostalgia!)?
4. I agree that too many watch celebrities pour champagne with watch executives (as I have raised in my previous post, which I refused to be part of anymore, except if they pay me to appear ), looking beautiful but bored and blank (I wondered how many events they have to join to get the mileage). But what can we say, some of those celebrities are our friends . What I hate the most is, I joined 3 dinners (JLC and 2 independents), and none of it had any model! None! Zero! Nada! As if my wife knew beforehand what event I would join and somehow meditated to get rid of any model that I can ogle.
5. At the end of the day, some people are just trying to make money, to recoupe their investment, and pay their bills by selling a gadget called a watch. Cut them some slack, mistake should be made, we as potential customers just have to shift the bad from the worse (the good were already in your safety box, pplater ).
Hope my reply touch a bit of your discussion, and if I digress, please pardon my IQ. This type of post should better be answered by Dr. No or ThomasM (but their answers are even more difficult to understand ).
