Firstly, Ping, thanks for such a great read! It's a thought provoking article and there are lots of wisdom in it! Thank you for sharing that!
In response to the question "What determines the longevity of a watch within a collection?", I must agree that what you've mentioned are some of the most common reasons people decide to part with their once-loved horological marvels.
Over the years, I've sold a few of my watches, and one pattern I noticed is that I sold most of them with the intention to "upgrade" to a better watch (not necessarily one for one, or at the same time). This in turn, is due to the accumulation of knowledge about time pieces, rather than getting bored of the outgoing ones.
As an example, prior to knowing about German watchmaking, my focus was on Swiss watches. Then with that knowledge, I bought a Lange & Sohne. Later on, I discovered the Independents, and I slowly sold a few of my watches, and replaced them gradually with Indies.
Needless to say, a lot of that knowledge, came from this very forum itself
